Living and Teaching in Japan. With a sense of humor about it. Thursday, June 20, 2013. Back in States - Kindergarten Story Time. I am back in the US now. So I can only write in the past tense now. I can only talk about things I did or that I used to do. For instance, after school lunch, I used to read books to the kids who finished eating early. The books, as you would expect, were in Japanese so I made up the story in English according to the pictures on the pages. June 20, 2013 at 10:36 PM. Yeah, I thi...

Mottainai: An interview with Catherine Quinn. August 30, 2015. September 6, 2015. The dye is as long lasting as ever but this material might be a bit stronger than average, as Catherine Quinn of Mottainai. The linen, is really hard-wearing and that is really important to me, the idea that you know it’s not gonna wear away quickly. Arriving in Japan after six years in Manchester where she studied textiles and fashion design Catherine found herself searching for a new challenge connected to her interests&#...

Go with your guidebook? With the Lonely Planet Japan guidebook devoting around one hundred pages each to the big three of Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka it’s easy to understand why other areas get fewer pages assigned to them. Leavin...

Living and Teaching in Japan. With a sense of humor about it. Sunday, October 21, 2012. Tom and Billy were playing video games together but not in the same room – they each sat in their own respective rooms approximately eight-thousand, four-hundred and sixty miles apart; separated by a mountain range, four national parks, six state borders, and an ocean, among other things. 8220;Sending troops now.” Billy said into the headset. 8220;The second wave will be ready in a minute-thirty.” Tom replied. 8220;My...

Living and Teaching in Japan: Tips for Studying Japanese

Living and Teaching in Japan. With a sense of humor about it. Tips for Studying Japanese. This is the basic regiment that has been working for me. Others might have different preferences or even better advice, but I think these are some good pointers for beginners. For looking up words I use Denshi Jisho. You can look up words using English, romaji, kana, kanji, kanji by stoke count and radicals, and you can easily copy and paste words and kanji from here into emails, facebook, and into blogs (wink-wink).

There is a peephole on my apartment’s bathroom door, for instance. Perhaps it doubles as a panic room but it’s best not to dwell on these matters. Talk about weird. And perhaps on the same scale – the existence of squatter...In many...
