These pictures show the process I use to make cane. A cane is a long, skinny rod of glass that has a design in it. I use cane in almost all my wall-hung work, and also to make knitting needles. I melt my glass in an electric kiln that holds 50 pounds of glass at 2100 degrees F. Here you see me gathering glass onto a punty rod to make cane. Tracy is holding the lid of the kiln open for me.

I earned a B.A. in studio art from Michigan State University in 1982 and took my first glassblowing class soon after that. About fifteen years later, glass re-emerged as a strong interest in my life and work, gradually becoming my favorite medium. For the past ten years I've worked almost exclusively in glass, and now am exploring encaustic as well. My studio is in Madison, Wisconsin. Glass Art Society: glassart.org. Last weekend Adri and I went to Santander in Cantabria, Spain to visit his family and friends and to run a precious race around the coast called the Trail Costa Quebrada. 21km and 950m of elevation gain, meaning quite a fast race with most of the circuit runnable but also with some rather steep climbs.
