One of the least recorded and heard mbira is the Mbira DzaVaNdau of the Ndau people in South Eastern Zimbabwe. The instrument has a six note scale as opposed to the more common seven note scale of the other mbira. The word mhumhi is the Shona word for the African wild dog (Lycaon pictus). While sitting with Newton Gwara, Joel was trying to figure out a name for the record label. Music of Joel Laviolette. First picked up his dad's acoustic guitar and learned an a minor chord. This would awaken his fire for moody ballads and major to minor modulation. After aquiring an old Fender Stratocaster for Christmas, Joel was finally able to transfer his tunes from the old beat up acoustic to the electric. Feedback experimentation was often heard in his bedroom. Through out his high-school years, Joel focused on both visual arts and music-finally settling on music. Joel first heard the mbira.

Joel began his musical journey in 1984 when he first picked up his dad’s acoustic guitar and learned an A minor chord. 10 years later, in Taos, NM (in the right place at the right time) Joel first heard the mbira.
