http://onthemainline.blogspot.com/2014/08/a-scene-from-semitic-room-in-new-york.html
Wednesday, August 20, 2014. A scene from the Semitic room in the New York Public Library, 1925. Here's an interesting little story about the reading room in the NYPL in 1925. An impressive, scholarly looking Chassidic man is spotted, and assumed to be reading some sort of lofty mystical text. It turns out, he's reading "Fiddler on the Roof" (Tevye der Milkhiger). The broader article is discussing leisure and the importance of childish tendencies in adults. 2:41 PM, August 20, 2014. Volozhin in the news.

http://onthemainline.blogspot.com/2009/06/what-time-is-shabbos-in-1842.html
Tuesday, June 30, 2009. What time is shabbos? Some time ago the Lion of Zion had a very interesting post called How Did Jewish Women Know When To Light Shabbat Candles in the 18th C? Or that the eighteen minutes were up and you had to park your horse and walk home? A few years ago I discovered the answer of how they knew the difference between 4:53 and 5:07. Answer: they couldn’t tell the difference. In case anyone is tempted to think that this was an ignorant periodical, unconcerned about zemanim. Prozb...

On the Main Line: An American Midwestern response to the Dreyfus Affair
http://onthemainline.blogspot.com/2015/04/an-american-midwestern-response-to.html
Wednesday, April 15, 2015. An American Midwestern response to the Dreyfus Affair. This is sweet. In 1899 Wichita, Kansas very nearly elected Miss Sadie Joseph queen of the Flower Parade at the Fall Carnival, because they really didn't like the verdict against Capt. Alfred Dreyfus in France. Some of the history books say she *was* elected, but I checked, and she just could not beat Miss Mayme Mahaney. However, many hearts were in the right place in this corner of The Music Man-era America. 2 On Hirsch's 1...

In the past, various communities had unique passages that they would include at various points in the seder. But hardly any books today include these passages.

Friday, August 08, 2014. Here's a wonderful appeal for matzot on behalf of prisoners, from 1899. 12:58 PM, August 08, 2014. There are, alas, many Hebrews in State-prisons. Alas indeed. Were many of them rabbis and community leaders? If not, we can congratulate ourselves for the higher quality of Hebrew prisoners weve got nowadays. 8:04 PM, August 11, 2014. I had never heard of Rabbi Radin before. Google search of Rabbi Adolph Radin is fascinating. 3:02 PM, March 27, 2015. Maybe Aviv is related to Jose.
