Modules and Wholes

Discussion around human centered design and human potential. Monday, May 14, 2007. It has been a long while since posting on this blog. The combination of a very full schedule and a desire to take a break from the blogging routine has created a hiatus far longer than I would have anticipated. Over the past year I have been fortunate to have been involved in a long term project that goes to the very core of what user centered design is about: redesigning companies! Link to this article. Modules and Wholes: May 2005

http://michaelandrews.blogspot.com/2005_05_01_archive.html

Discussion around human centered design and human potential. Tuesday, May 31, 2005. Can users "love" something important? Could it be that users don't want excitement for things they "need", they only want excitement for things they don't need? If so, what limits does that place on what kinds of things can be addressed by emotional design? I've been revisiting Del Coates' excellent book,. Watches tell more than time. Some of these implications sound like they fit, even though I also have some doubts....

Modules and Wholes: June 2005

http://michaelandrews.blogspot.com/2005_06_01_archive.html

Discussion around human centered design and human potential. Wednesday, June 29, 2005. We hear constantly that jargon is "bad" because outsiders don't understand it. But jargon is also good because it represents a highly developed and meaningful vocabulary among a social network. I admit to feeling uncomfortable when hearing jargon I don't understand. Discussion around human centered design and human potential. Thursday, April 28, 2005. The trend that says that design is next big trend. I've just finished reading Daniel Pink's new book,. A Whole New Mind. I think the critical issue for designers is what leverage they can gain, which often is limited. Designers are a bit like athletes or actors: a few get all the recognition and money, and majority are anonymous, and can feel the constant threat of younger, cheaper competitors. Modules and Wholes: user agency

http://michaelandrews.blogspot.com/2005/11/user-agency.html

Discussion around human centered design and human potential. Sunday, November 06, 2005. Garden variety psychologists - the kind who write advice columns, rather than study rats and undergraduates - often talk about attribution. Is the consequence of my action the result of my skill, or some external factor? The organizational psychologist Yiannis Gabriel has talked about the increasing tendency for workers to desire to "be discovered." Previously, hard steady work was the recipe for advancement. ...Poste...

Modules and Wholes: agile usability by committee

http://michaelandrews.blogspot.com/2005/12/agile-usability-by-committee.html

Discussion around human centered design and human potential. Friday, December 30, 2005. Agile usability by committee. You know something is brewing when the end-of-year issues of both SIGCHI's. First the good news: agile software development methods are generally better than RUP in reflecting user needs. The bad news: agile is not that much better. Can fusing usability into agile programming make the product truly reflect user needs? At the heart of agile methods is meetings, generally very small meeting...
