The Great Toy Purge. June 18, 2014. During my efforts to get control over the mess of toys in our living room, I started the concept of the I forgot to put it away box. Anything that my daughters did not put away at the end of the day went into the I forgot to put it away box. If they wanted an item back, they would have to earn it back by doing a chore. Then to my surprise and chagrin, it was me who was more attached to the toys than my daughters! Invariably my girls chose to keep them. What can I say?

As a young girl, my family saved almost everything. Before throwing anything away we would always ask ourselves, Could we possibly use this? I became very skilled at thinking up reasons to hold onto items such as card board boxes, scratch paper, left-over art and craft supplies to name a few. For example, I was reading about people who have gotten rid of their TVs. Personally, I would gladly give up TV, but my husband loves watching TV to unwind from his day. Therefore, we will probably always have a TV in the house. The path to minimalism in our household will be finding a balance that works for everyone in the family.
