Going back…a return to rural life. Archive for August, 2015. On August 11, 2015 7 Comments. It takes three years to turn a manure pile into a source of gold for the garden. This was the third year for the first pile and earlier this spring I spread and mixed the whole pile into the garden. It was so worth it! I could not be happier with the fruit and vegetables and flowers that grew this year. The tomatoes are ripening. Spaghetti squash is huge. Peas are on their second picking. Cosmos and more poppies.

I’m not sure who was the more curious this afternoon – the geese who were hoping to share the shade on this side of the hay field – or the herd. The geese were so close at one point that Darby sneezed and caused a big kerfuffle by scaring one goose into spreading his wings in attack mode! He waded away complaining all the while about the wet sneezes of donkeys! Turns out we’ve been doing some great things.
