She had put out poison, but the droppings continued. I saw she had a small bar type cabinet on the patio. When I pulled the cabinet away I could see chewing, wood chips and immediately knew the source of the problem. Underneath the peppers was a thick layer of acorns. Looking inside on the far left was a few more peppers and a nice nest.

It was tiny and at first I thought it was a shell like the type pictured below. People will bring shells home from the beach, leave them out on the patio and the pack rats will take a few for their nests. After all they are "pack rats"! I bent over to pick the "shell up" and saw it was a very little snake. My next thought was "oh, its a harmless blind night snake.

Even if you think your house does not have an attic, there is a space between the roof and the ceiling where a pack rat can live. The challenge is to determine how the rats gain access. They only nest in the attic, but every night they will go in and out multiple times doing what pack rats do - mainly collecting food and items of interest. They get in through open bird screens. . . And gaps. . . And holes . . Exper...

Those incisors (teeth) never stop growing. They must gnaw everyday to keep their teeth from growing to too long. Recently I trapped a live rat who would not let go of the bars on the trap. Upon closer examination I could see why. The rat managed to take off about 1/8" of rock in a 3"x 5". Maybe chewing on a rock was how the rat I trapped broke o...

Mesquite beans are ripe right now and all the pack rats will be busy creating their stash for the year. A single rat can collect bushels of beans. Forget the poison, the bait box is a great place to hide mesquite beans. The rat will stash there beans not only in their nest, but also any place close by. After all it is a storage closet. Subscribe to Blog by Email. Monday, February 17, 2014. What do all rodents have in common? The term rodent comes from the Latin word rodere. Which literally means "to gnaw". Rodents, including pack rats have a single pair of upper and a single pair of lower incisors that are perfectly adapted to gnawing. In fact, those incisors never stop growing. No only can rodents gnaw, they must gnaw everyday to keep their teeth from growing to too long. Constant gnawing also keeps the teeth razor sharp.
