Hands Remember: Northern Travels

http://www.myhandsremember.blogspot.com/2011/02/northern-travels.html

Thursday, February 24, 2011. Despite there being a lapse of over two weeks since I went on vacation, I think I remember it well enough still to write about it. Just kidding, it was awesome and there is no way I could forget about it! I wish that last sentence isn't as true as it actually is.anyways, it was a nice week of vacation. (Though I shouldn't really be talking considering there was only 3 weeks of school since the semester started and I was sick through one of them.oops). Factory, a factory that ...

Hands Remember: Valentine's Day

http://www.myhandsremember.blogspot.com/2011/02/valentines-day.html

Friday, February 25, 2011. In Japan, Valentine's Day is celebrated a little bit differently than what we are used to in the U.S. Here, instead of couples giving gifts to each other, or males giving gifts to females, it is pretty strictly followed that only females give gifts (namely chocolate) to males. There are even different types of chocolate depending on the giver's relationship to the receiver. There is giri. Is short for tomodachi. Despite the fact that I find Japanese Valentine's Day a little str...

Hands Remember: October 2010

http://www.myhandsremember.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

Sunday, October 17, 2010. A Festival, Small Town Style. The portable Shinto shrine. The thing that surprised me the most was how drunk the men participating in the festival were. I had expected them to be somewhat inebriated, but some could barely walk- and they were the ones carrying the mikoshi. Even though I knew it was customary it still took me by surprise. But I was warned by Mayumi that because it is such a small town I would stand out quite a bit. Both Mayumi and her mother caught more than I did!

Hands Remember: Winter Travels

http://www.myhandsremember.blogspot.com/2011/01/winter-travels.html

Monday, January 17, 2011. Now that the craziness of finals week/holidays/traveling around Japan for two weeks has finally settled down, I'm hoping to be able to talk about what's been going on around here for the past few months. Yikes, it's already been months; this thing must be collecting dust! On Thursday, December 23rd I headed to the airport to pick up none other than my boyfriend, who decided to come visit me for a few weeks here in Japan! All in one big sweep (but not without a lunch break! Next ...

The Japan Experience: It’s not a cold!: On colds, flu, hygiene, sanitation in Japan

http://evansjapanexperience.blogspot.com/2011/02/its-not-cold-on-colds-flu-hygiene.html

A record of experiences and cultural analyses of a study abroad student in Nagoya, Japan. Wednesday, February 23, 2011. It’s not a cold! On colds, flu, hygiene, sanitation in Japan. There are many discrepancies in the Japanese language that I have become aware of since being here, whether it’s words with double, conflicting meanings, or just plain lack of clarity. One of the hardest to discern happens to be kaze, what we are taught to understand as a cold. A couple times a week, it seems, I overhear the ...

The Japan Experience: W the Japan, W the Fun

http://evansjapanexperience.blogspot.com/2011/03/w-japan-w-fun.html

A record of experiences and cultural analyses of a study abroad student in Nagoya, Japan. Friday, March 4, 2011. W the Japan, W the Fun. With my recent spree of rant posts, I feel the need to lighten things up a bit (just in case more ranting will ensue in the near future). It took me several months before I recognized a perfect example of Japanese innovation (? With incorporating English into daily life. I only realized this after seeing a commercial for laundry detergent where the only thing the lady s...

The Japan Experience: May 2011

http://evansjapanexperience.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

A record of experiences and cultural analyses of a study abroad student in Nagoya, Japan. Wednesday, May 11, 2011. Japanese Traffic Stop: Who needs patrol cars anyway? One of the most unique occurrences I bore witness to happened within my first month in Japan. I was returning home from my local ward office (kind of like a town hall) after obtaining my foreigner registration card, and I could not believe what unfolded right before my very eyes. The Japan Experience: October 2010

http://evansjapanexperience.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html

A record of experiences and cultural analyses of a study abroad student in Nagoya, Japan. Tuesday, October 26, 2010. Tribute to a Friend: Not to be forgotten. It takes but a moment for everything you knew to change. This week the unforeseeable happened and my short year of studies in Japan became undesirably prolonged, not in actual length but perspective. So many funny stories and goofy antics; they just don’t come in quite the variety Dylan so easily provided. It’s something we’ll...It’s worth mo...

http://evansjapanexperience.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

A record of experiences and cultural analyses of a study abroad student in Nagoya, Japan. Sunday, March 13, 2011. Experiencing the earthquake from Nagoya. When I came to Japan, I had anticipated experiencing an earthquake. It's something one should expect when planning a long term stay in one of the earth's most seismically active countries. Things calmed again, and life resumed its regular pace. People around me were unfazed. When I resumed my spot in the lab, I immediately checked for updates. My g...

The Japan Experience: Failure of Priorities: Examining Japanese news

http://evansjapanexperience.blogspot.com/2011/02/failure-of-priorities-examining.html

A record of experiences and cultural analyses of a study abroad student in Nagoya, Japan. Sunday, February 27, 2011. Failure of Priorities: Examining Japanese news. As a student of journalism, I have a tendency to analyze news critically. What I observed yesterday on the evening news frustrated me greatly. Instead of spending that time wisely, last night NHK spent the first 15 minutes out of the 30 minute broadcast on a single story of cheating on a college entrance exam. College entry in Japan is quite ...

The Japan Experience: Endings are only new beginnings

http://evansjapanexperience.blogspot.com/2011/04/endings-are-only-new-beginnings.html

A record of experiences and cultural analyses of a study abroad student in Nagoya, Japan. Wednesday, April 20, 2011. Endings are only new beginnings. As you might have inferred from my lack of posts this last month, I am no longer in Japan. One of the biggest study abroad programs). Our early return was arranged in conjunction with our program insurance, and our departments have been working very hard to arrange for the correct appropriation of credit where it is due. I departed that Saturday morning fro...

A record of experiences and cultural analyses of a study abroad student in Nagoya, Japan. Tuesday, February 15, 2011. Hokkaido Trip Day 1: Luminaries at Otaru. The moment we surfaced we simultaneously blurted, “Holy crap. It’s winter! 8221; The ice encrusted sidewalks, towering snow banks and biting wind chill were much more what we had all been accustomed to growing up in the Midwest. Sometimes a Domme

Thursday, June 21, 2012. As I have become more comfortable and confident with my dominant persona the relationship with Billy has broadened and the initial reason for our meetings become long overlooked. I had never successfully milked him and this irked me so I decided it was time to try again. A text was sent and a time specified. For us to reconnect. I grabbed the leather strap and let it fall. Speaking With My Hands. My journey learning American Sign Language. Lost Item Story for my ASL Basic 2 class.
