Navigating the healthcare system. Dr Gregory A Hand. Dr James O Hill. Global Energy Balance Network. August 12, 2015. My kids have a book about a mouse who goes to school with a purple plastic purse. At least I think it’s a mouse. She goes on various adventures and at one point her school teacher says: “Wow. That’s about all I can say.”. Ever heard of the Global Energy Balance Network (GEBN)? Calories.” That strong evidence? Two research papers, both funded by Coca-Cola. We partner with some of the forem...

Navigating the healthcare system. The Problem With Internship. July 1, 2015. Every once in a while Sandeep Juhar shows up in the New York Times, and it is always a good read. Today he talked about The Problem With Internship ( http:/ nyti.ms/1IqHf03. Additionally, attending physicians, who have completed residency and are supposedly in charge, have no such restrictions. Witness my own regular weekend 24-hour in-house call. The Problem With Internship is not. From → education. Absolutely not – it wa...

Navigating the healthcare system. March 17, 2016. Humans will be human. This week the governor of the great state of Massachusetts, my home state, signed into law a bill that puts strict limits on new opioid prescriptions, specifically a limit of a dosage sufficient for 72 hours, among other things. This of course, is in response to the opioid addiction problem afflicting the country. Many other states are taking similar measures. I am of two minds on this. Such laws are a good idea. Why so many pills?

Navigating the healthcare system. Winning the Popularity Contest. June 4, 2015. I have to take issue with an article published several days ago by the New York Times about communication and the prevention of malpractice litigation ( http:/ nyti.ms/1FXDcH1. How could there possibly be any confusion? Communication is hindered not only by language, but by differences in underlying knowledge base specific to the subject at hand. Trying to save the babies’ lives at the time. The third way communication breaks...

Navigating the healthcare system. American Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants. June 12, 2015. Another group of “midlevels”: Anesthesia Assistants. What is an AA, exactly? Here is what the AAAA (American Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants, of course) says in their career flyer:. Ah So, they’re like CRNAs. What’s the difference? Prostate cancer screening is back in the news, at least for those who read the New York Times and don’t mind their OpEds more Op than Ed. (or more OpEd than evidence-based.)
