The Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) is a community-based project to conduct a detailed study of solar internal structure and dynamics using helioseismology. A major challenge in helioseismology is uncertainties and errors imposed by day-night cycles and local observatory weather. Overcoming single observatory limitations, GONG has deployed a network of six inexpensive instruments around the world to provide nearly continuous, extremely sensitive, observations of the solar velocities.

One of the first objects that Galileo looked at through his telescope was the Sun, where he quickly noticed the presence of dark areas that are known as sunspots. Sometime later, it was noticed that the number of sunspots seemed to rise and fall with a period of about 11 years, marking the discovery of the sunspot or solar activity cycle.
