General Background

http://www.northwag.org/our-projects/industrial/astley-forge-mill/general-background

This plan shows the extent of the site. The Forge has had a long history and would no doubt have had activities associated with the water driven blast furnace further up the valley. What is known for certain is that an iron forge existed here for a short time in the early 1800s, after the Worcester Porcelain Co., (now Fight and Barr) vacated the site. A collaboration between NorthWAG, the South Worcestershire Archaeology Group, and a direct descendant of the Timberlake family line, with the aim of reveal...

Season 2 Excavations

http://www.northwag.org/our-projects/community/olivers-mound/season-2-excavations

Excavations - Season Two. Written by Diana Huston. Phase II and III Report (PDF). In terms of artefacts, the Season 2 excavations at Oliver's Mound were five times more productive than the first season. Large quantities of bone, (red deer, pig, cattle) and more 13th century black glaze cooking ware were found, including some neatly decorated green glazed pieces and a rare piece of Anglo-Saxon ware. We even found four pieces of flint which potentially takes the site into the Stone Age! The trench at the S...

The History of Shrawley and Oliver's Mound. Written by Rod Sproat. Exploring Bayton in the Middle Ages. April 11, 2015. More than a bad rash: mapping the 1291/2 Taxatio in the Bayton area. Everybody loves a good map. Database, the fruit of almost three decades’ work digitising Pope Nicholas IV’s 1291/2 tax assessment of English and Welsh benefices. The significance of this assessment has been justly recognised by historians for more than a century, not least because it remained the basis of parliamentary and convocation grants of the clergy well into the 16. Function it...

Exploring Bayton in the Middle Ages. Daily Archives: April 5, 2014. April 5, 2014. Scrambling about in the mud. Readers will note that it’s been more than two months since I last updated this blog. There are some good reasons for that (. 8211; between jet-setting off to conferences in Basel and London and a rapidly-growing pile of coins to ID on my desk, I’ve had little time to put pen to paper – figuratively – on all themes medieval and Bayton-ian.
