Thursday, July 5, 2012. America's Finest at Work. To recap: border patrol agents stop a car because it sets off a radiation detector. In the car is an employee of that hotbed of terrorism, the University of Arizona, and a man old enough to remember the presidency of Herbert Hoover. Source of said radiation is explained. Nevertheless, the senior citizen is detained in a tent in summer in the desert for half an hour. Icing on the cake: the senior citizen in question is a former governor of Arizona. Nicknam...

Notes & Comments: August 2011

http://notesandcomments1.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 28, 2011. Hurricane Preparation, Boston-Style. In North Carolina, where I used to live, during the days before a hurrican, you made sure your weather radio worked, bought water, batteries, non-perishable foods and (depending upon your inclinations) bourbon. Yesterday I went to the nearest grocery store. The shelves were fully stocked with bread and bottled water. They had plenty of batteries. I did notice, however, that the store had run out of low-fat yogurt. Links to this post. It was a ...

Notes & Comments: November 2011

http://notesandcomments1.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Tuesday, November 22, 2011. Recently one of the cover lines on a recent issue of MacLean's. Caught my eye: "National Symbol Smackdown." The related article was about the campaign by Canadian MP Nicole Eaton to make the polar bear Canada's national symbol, displacing the beaver, which has formally enjoyed the honor since 1975 (but for much longer informally). The Honourable Ms. Eaton has some rather harsh things to say about castor canadiensis. I was also bemused that a huge controversy could be happening...

Meanwhile, analysts are looking at Argentina and asking, " Where's the beef? The Wisconsin State Fair: they come for the deep fried beer, and stay for the bacon sundae. Tuesday, June 21, 2011. Yesterday my friend over at Three Good Rats. Emailed me. The subject line was "Important News! In the milliseconds before I opened the message a couple of possibilities of what the news could be passed through my mind. At first I wondered if another former associate of Sarah Palin's had written a book. Then I wondered if Keith Olbermann had finally spontaneously combusted (admit it, you've been expecting it to happen for years). And they found something else that makes them think ...

Notes & Comments: Fourth of July Thoughts

http://notesandcomments1.blogspot.com/2012/07/fourth-of-july-thoughts.html

Wednesday, July 4, 2012. Fourth of July Thoughts. The Continental Congress actually voted to declare independence on July 2, 1776, leading John Adams to write to his wife:. However, it wasn't until two days later that the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence (and only after some editing that severely wounded the young author's ego. Then someone rang the bell of the State House of the Province of Pennsylvania. Too busy, I guess. In spite of having been but a small horrible...

A Brilliant Shade of Red. KT's reading and writing blog. Monday, June 18, 2012. Monday Morning Quote: George Bilgere on Inspiration. I think "inspiration" is what happens, if you’re lucky, during the rather dull and arduous process of writing a poem. You’re plugging away, nothing of much interest is going on, you’re thinking this one’s going to be a dud—then, bingo! 8212;George Bilgere, author of The White Museum. A Brilliant Shade of Red. KT's reading and writing blog. Monday, May 28, 2012. Monday Morning Quote: Maxine Kumin on Dreams. Virtually every dream example I call up out of my poems teeters on the border between life and death, this seems quite apt to me, for I feel that poetry is essentially elegiac in its nature. We hold hard to those we love even as they die away from us and we continue to pursue them, through dreams into poems. 8212;Maxine Kiumin, Always Beginning. Friday, May 25, 2012. The World We F...

A Brilliant Shade of Red. KT's reading and writing blog. Monday, July 23, 2012. Monday Morning Quote: Mary Ruefle on Beginnings. T]he lesson is always the same, and young poets recognize this to be one of the most important lessons they can learn: If you have any idea for a poem, an exact grid of intent, you are on the wrong path, a dead-end alley, and the top of a cliff you haven't even climbed. This is a lesson that can only be learned by trial and error. 8212; Mary Ruefle. In her essay "On Beginnings,".

A Brilliant Shade of Red. KT's reading and writing blog. Monday, February 27, 2012. Monday Morning Quote: Kim Addonizio on Demons. Your demons are there to be used an overcome, and in this sense they are ultimately helpful. Did you think writing great, or even good, poems would be easy? What feeling of accomplishment would you get from doing what is easy, what anyone can do without trying? Once you do that, other demons will show up. 8212;Kim Addonizio, Ordinary Genius. Cheesecake with a Twist. April 18, 2013. Davao City is well known for the abundant and wide variety of fruits. From the healthy Mangosteen, the sweet Lanzones, the Rambutan, Mango, the tangy Pomelo, and of course, the unique and very delicious Durian :-). I am a big fan of the Durian fruit. It’s just delicious :-). It mixes well with most sweet treats, tarts, ice cream, candies, and one of my faves: cheesecake. April 13, 2013. Notes and Cigarette Burns

Notes and Cigarette Burns. Betwixt and between the lines. Friday, June 26, 2015. One of the hardest bones to gnaw on. Like an old stubborn man who lived enough to have his own antics and tomfoolery learnt and settled, tangled up in marrow. An old friend of mine was in charge of delivering the news that got stuck in my head for the rest of the day, stuck, like the knot in the throat that prevents cold hard men from talking their hearts out. Dan is dead, suicide." Said an old friend of mine. A walk outside...
