While you wait | our man in cameroon
https://ourmanincameroon.wordpress.com/2009/08/24/while-you-wait
Our man in cameroon. Living in Bamenda Doing the VSO Thing. Laquo; The leaving of COPAAP. Some final thoughts on VSO. This shaky one shot video was taken by a colleague and given to me as part of a whole stack of other recordings that he wanted me to make into a movie for him. I cut all his interviews and spliced them with the market shots, added the music, and handed it over. But, personally, I preferred just the market and the song. It says more about Bamenda life than a thousand of my blog posts.

Our man in cameroon. Living in Bamenda Doing the VSO Thing. Laquo; Some final thoughts on VSO. Six months after Cameroon. Leaving Cameroon is proving trickier than I thought. NB: My time in Cameroon is now over. This is the first post of two summing up my thoughts. With two months to go in Cameroon a wave of euphoria washed over me – the feeling being that after a tough time I would soon be going home. I’m aware there’s still a fug. Hopefully one that will lift. As I set off for Hanoi? I think there̵...

Our man in cameroon. Living in Bamenda Doing the VSO Thing. Laquo; While you wait. Leaving Cameroon is proving trickier than I thought. Some final thoughts on VSO. The important point that you need to remember is: while VSO’s recent performance has, at times, been inexcusable – it’s still no reason not to volunteer with them. Because while it can be an awfully run organisation, it remains a wonderful concept and opportunity. And you should do it. So where do I start? Are potential donors ignored? Okay, j...

Our man in cameroon. Living in Bamenda Doing the VSO Thing. Laquo; Corruption *IS* killing Cameroon. The leaving of COPAAP. As predicted there was no way of getting through the leaving do without wearing traditonal dress. The event, as always, started late but with good reason. Perhaps the heaviest storm of the year hit Bamenda knocking out power and subsequently water for the best part of the last 24 hours. The heavens themselves were marking the occasion. I was one day away from getting out.”. People w...

Our man in cameroon. Living in Bamenda Doing the VSO Thing. Laquo; A Country Tale. The leaving of COPAAP. Corruption *IS* killing Cameroon. During a wider discussion on whether corruption can ever be excused, or even in the case of corrupt cop versus “rich suv driving ass”. It’s fair to make the cop the hero, the above tweet was tweeted. It absolutely stopped me in my tracks. Is no slouch – her own Twitter bio reads:. And then, I picked up The Undercover Economist. A book that I had been wading through f...

My enemy is my brother | Inside Out
https://ramingillett.wordpress.com/2014/06/26/my-enemy-is-my-brother
My enemy is my brother. June 26, 2014. America was. It was a grand show of muscle, and the whole thing was over as soon as it began. Like America and many Americans, I am a product of cultural mélange. We are, after all, a nation of immigrants, and to be American is to have a multiplicity of origins. Despite this similarity, there is one thing that sets me apart: I am as incapable of subscribing solely to one national narrative, as I am of speaking only in one language. June 26, 2014. You are not African.

June 11, 2014. In the evening, the lonely tractors near our house. Smell cold, and remind me of money that goes. Clink clink clink,. And that place daddy takes the car on quiet sunny mornings. I pull myself up the side and climb unto the broken leather chair. The wheel is as big as a mountain you can pinch from far away. Up Down. Left. Right. The stick does not listen, but the round ball feels smooth. Up Down. Left. Right. Don’t mess with me ‘cause I can run you over. The grass in the distance is so tall.
The hard life of an imposteur | Inside Out
https://ramingillett.wordpress.com/2014/11/07/the-hard-life-of-an-imposteur
The hard life of an imposteur. November 7, 2014. Just nod and smile. When I was a freshman in college, the entire floor of my dorm thought I was from Cancun. You can imagine why. The similarities are quite compelling. It took many conversations before that misconception was cleared up, but again, it never did. I just became that kid from South Africa. Such a simple question, and yet it isn’t really. I could as well say Iowa, and very few people would think twice about that. Ringing across this land.

You are not African | Inside Out

You are not African. June 26, 2014. Where are you from? But you are white. Yes, I know that. Ok, but where are you. Ok, you’ve said that, but where are your parents from? So, what are you… American or Iraqi? I don’t know. Does it matter? Because, you have to belong somewhere! You must be an American! Because, you talk like an American. If I talk like a Cameroonian, that means I am Cameroonian? What does your passport say? Then, you are American! Ok I am American, but I am also many other things. Politics...
one year cameroon: März 2009

Dienstag, 31.

June 6, 2014. This was one of my teachers from primary school. He was a kind soul, and would sometimes invite me to have a snack with him during break. http://bamendawork.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html
Donnerstag, 25. September 2008.

A journal of vanity, keen observation and dissidence. Talking with Sigrid Nunez and more…. Heller McAlpine, in her smart take* on Sigrid Nunez’s new novel,. Echoes my exact experience with Nunez , albeit with an earlier novel,. The Last of Her Kind. Has as much to say about literature as about grief, and was wondering how she’d slipped below my radar.”. The novel begins brilliantly:. This was the last thing you and I talked about while you were still alive. After, only your email with a list of books...

Violent protests spark U-turn on transport fares. June 19th, 2013. Protestors in Brasilia: Photo: Agencia Brasil. Rises in public transport fares in São Paulo and Rio de Janiero that sparked nationwide protests have been cancelled following talks between city and state governments. Social media sites have been crackling with chatter and the exchange of information about the demonstrations. One graphic shared on Facebook showed a congressman picks up more than 25 times the monthly salary of a fireman....

Our Man In California. He Came He Saw He Bought the T-Shirt. Back in the USSSSA. February 19, 2013. So I got my Visa and got back to the US not without some drama. The visa turned up on monday about 4 hours after they promised it would appear but given it had been quite snowy and traffic hard I was willing to forgive that it also meant I was back from darkest Suffolk after Fishcon to receive my passport in person which required no form of ID. Back to the worlds most secure argos. February 5, 2013. So I&#...

our man in cameroon | Living in Bamenda Doing the VSO Thing
Our man in cameroon. Living in Bamenda Doing the VSO Thing. Six months after Cameroon. Posted March 11, 2010 by Steve Jackson. I was prompted to write this after I read the following poem posted by a fellow VSO. I knew her in my time in Cameroon but she has only just finished her placement. I will never see a plant. From this barren ground. As I was filling-up my suitcase,. I realized how many masks you have given me –. Masks that made me smile,. Masks that hid my tears,. Masks that shielded my fears.
