The Abbot of St. Albans was granted a Charter by the king in the twelfth century to hold a market weekly in the town. This would have included the sale of livestock as well as a general market. Telling the stories of a diverse town. You are here: Home. At the edge of the canvas. Artists routinely positioned blacks at the edge of the canvas. This painting of Cassiobury Park is an example. These records show the baptisms of three black servants in the 18th century. The burials of two black men are recorded in Watford parish records. Watford began as a settlement in the 12th century when a market was granted to the Abbot of St. Albans as the lord of the manor. He chose a site along a route already used by travellers, where the market continued to be held until 1928.
