Pembrokeshire ringing group

A diary of a group of enthusiastic volunteers researching and monitoring the birds of Pembrokeshire. Wednesday, 5 August 2015. Whilst trying to catch nightjars for ringing and radio tagging, it is very common to catch a few ******** going to roost in the sitka stands during late July and August, though we have never caught a house martin. So whilst extracting a white-rumped hirundine from a mistnet last night I thought - oooh a new species of by-catch for Brechfa! Adult female and two juvenile nightjars.

Pembrokeshire ringing group: Waders and wrens

http://www.pembsringinggroup.blogspot.com/2015/02/waders-and-wrens.html

A diary of a group of enthusiastic volunteers researching and monitoring the birds of Pembrokeshire. Tuesday, 10 February 2015. The plan this year is to considerably expand the wader ringing effort by starting colour-ringing schemes for four common species that are known to be declining - oystercatcher, curlew, whimbrel and redshank. A colour-ringing scheme for whimbrel has already been initiated by Tony Cross and the Mid-Wales team. On a completely different note, it is not very often that ringing wrens...

Pembrokeshire ringing group: Dipper boxes 100% occupied

A diary of a group of enthusiastic volunteers researching and monitoring the birds of Pembrokeshire. Thursday, 16 April 2015. Dipper boxes 100% occupied. A total of 17 dipper nestlings were ringed from four broods that were ready including a brood of five. All the complete clutches were of either four or five eggs. A healthy brood of four dippers at perfect ringing age. You don't need to bother taking a ladder if you take Paul. Grey wagtail sat tight on a clutch of five eggs. Dipper boxes 100% occupied.

Pembrokeshire ringing group: 47 and still counting

http://www.pembsringinggroup.blogspot.com/2015/05/47-and-still-counting.html

A diary of a group of enthusiastic volunteers researching and monitoring the birds of Pembrokeshire. Sunday, 31 May 2015. 47 and still counting. The last individual to be added to the tally was a female wheatear originally ringed as a juvenile on 4th July 2014 at Carn Ingli by Karen (Teifi RG). It is only 8km as the crow flies from Carn Ingli and the date and age of the bird suggests that it was presumably born very locally to Carn Ingli before settling to breed within a few km here at Carn Breseb (v.

Pembrokeshire ringing group: January 2015

http://www.pembsringinggroup.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

A diary of a group of enthusiastic volunteers researching and monitoring the birds of Pembrokeshire. Thursday, 22 January 2015. Monitoring winter woodcock and snipe. Positions of woodcock encountered during nocturnal ringing activities and plotted using hand-held gps. Over the past few years counts of woodcock and snipe have been made whilst out in the fields trying to catch and ring these species, and sometimes their positions plotted as shown above. On some (most! It seemed this year that there were fe...

Ryan Knight-Fox Bird Ringing: Species number 16

http://knight-foxbirdringing.blogspot.com/2016/12/species-number-16.html

Ryan Knight-Fox Bird Ringing. Thursday, 1 December 2016. I have now ringed 16 species and just over 150 birds at this site. Thank you to the Teifi Ringers for their advice on how to catch the Redwing and thank you Charlie for the Latvian Redwing sound, which brought them down to the mist net. I caught the first one at 8:30am and then two more at 9:00am. Other birds ringed this morning, starting at 6:45am, were: 2 Blackbirds, 3 Blue tits, 1 Chaffinch and another male Great spotted woodpecker.

Ryan Knight-Fox Bird Ringing: That enjoyable moment when the sun finally appears.

http://knight-foxbirdringing.blogspot.com/2016/10/that-enjoyable-moment-when-sun-finally.html

Ryan Knight-Fox Bird Ringing. Monday, 24 October 2016. That enjoyable moment when the sun finally appears. I was out three times last week, but not a lot to show for it. I ran out of sunflower seeds, so less chaffinches and no goldfinches. I did get another woodpecker though and a pair of bullfinches :). Male (red patch on the back of the head), Great spotted-woodpecker. A few flocks of Redwing have flown over so fingers crossed. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

Ryan Knight-Fox Bird Ringing: Over 100 birds

http://knight-foxbirdringing.blogspot.com/2016/10/over-100-birds.html

Ryan Knight-Fox Bird Ringing. Sunday, 16 October 2016. Nice first net round with four new birds, Nuthatch, Chaffinch, Robin and another Goldfinch. This is the 3rd Nuthatch I have ringed, so far I have had two males and one female. The image below indicates that this is a male from the deep rufous feathers underneath its tale. I also had two helpers for a little while, my wife Cathryn, who got to ring bird number 100 (Chaffinch) and my daughter Savannah who was just a bit of a heavy lump :).

Ryan Knight-Fox Bird Ringing: September 2016

http://knight-foxbirdringing.blogspot.com/2016_09_01_archive.html

Ryan Knight-Fox Bird Ringing. Friday, 23 September 2016. I decided to try the mist net in a new location. Which is slightly more open and more exposed than the last site. So far it has been more successful in trapping Chaffinches than the last site. With 5 male and 3 female caught. Juvenile male Bullfinch (left). Red feathers beginning to grow through (right) is an indication that it is a male. And a peacock butterfly. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. BTO Bird Ringing - 'Demog Blog'.

Ryan Knight-Fox Bird Ringing: Species number 14

http://knight-foxbirdringing.blogspot.com/2016/10/species-number-14.html

Ryan Knight-Fox Bird Ringing. Sunday, 9 October 2016. The Blackbird. I was surprised how long it took to catch one as there is at least 6 around. Due to rain, but mainly wind, ringing has been a bit quieter, so I have been spending more time getting the ringing shed cosier. Here's my daughter Savannah doing some work in her woodland activity book. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Ryan Knight-Fox Bird Ringing: Linnets and Goldfinches

http://knight-foxbirdringing.blogspot.com/2016/10/linnets-and-goldfinches.html

Ryan Knight-Fox Bird Ringing. Friday, 14 October 2016. Linnet ringing at Mwnt with the Teifi Ringers this morning, using a whoosh net. 64 linnets and 1 house sparrow, which was the highlight for Andrew, a trainee with the Teifi Ringing Group as it was a new species for him. Later on I was back in my garden, where I'm happy to say I got a pair of Goldfinches, species number 15 :). Male Goldfinch, as the red on the face extends to behind the eye and has darker/blacker nostril whisker/feathers.

Pembrokeshire Rarities

Saturday, 13 June 2015. At last Rare Birds put in an appearance. A Swainson's Thrush on Skokholm has been the big news, prompting only the second ever twitch to the Island and it didn't disappoint the visitors who turned up to see it. The westerly airstream brought in several Nearctic birds and now it's switched to a southerly and easterly direction, more birds are turning up nationally and locally. Hopefully there's more to come.
