Skip to main content. Skip to primary sidebar. Skip to secondary sidebar. Thoughts on Life with a Pollyanna Perspective. When was the last time you sent a postcard to someone else? Remember trying to write your message in the tiny space provided, scrunching your letters and even curving them up the side to avoid the “DO NOT WRITE BELOW THIS LINE” section reserved for the mail service scan code? Did you pause before writing, realizing your elaborate details would need to be concise with brevity? I decided...

It’s funny what sounds you hear when you sit silently, even in the midst of twenty children. The hum of the fluorescent lights suddenly becomes an annoying mosquito, buzzing in your ear. The creaks of the building make your eyes dart much like playing the arcade game “Whack-a-Mole”...That’s when I hea...

Engage, Inspire, Lead. My thoughts on teaching young minds with purpose and passion! Monday, October 27, 2014. I'll admit it, and I'm okay with it. I'm a nerd. I've always loved reading and always did well in school (except for freshman biology in college, but.). I love learning and spend a lot of time seeking new ideas and trying new things. That's why I jumped at the chance to attend nErDcamp Iowa last Saturday.and it was awesome. Banner outside Southeast Elementary in Ankeny, Iowa. The neat thing abou...

Engage, Inspire, Lead. My thoughts on teaching young minds with purpose and passion! Monday, July 27, 2015. A New Experience at #ILA15. The setting was not new - but the experience was. In the shadow of the Gateway Arch, on the banks of the Mississippi River, lies the city of St. Louis. It was the location of our family vacation in 2003 as well as a few other short stops over the years I've lived here in the Midwest. But this time was different, in purpose and in company. http://engageinspirelead.blogspot.com/2015/08/its-almost-time.html
Engage, Inspire, Lead. My thoughts on teaching young minds with purpose and passion! Monday, August 3, 2015. Photo by Jen Houlette. A few short weeks, and it will be time. Time for schedules, lessons, organizing, preparing, decorating, planning.and so on! But most importantly, it will be time for building relationships, both old and new. So, we spent a lot of time with literature. It was just part of my effort in establishing the type of atmosphere in our classroom: one with kindness, trust, creativity, ...

Overall, I have had a great year! There are so many new things that my students were able to experience (thanks to my team, too) and for that I am grateful. Engage, Inspire, Lead. My thoughts on teaching young minds with purpose and passion! Saturday, August 1, 2015. 8220;Carve a tunnel of hope through the dark mountain of disappointment.”. Martin Luther King, Jr. Photo by Jen Houlette. Disappointment and anger were evident in his eyes. Tight lips and crossed arms added to his posture and I knew something was wrong. A few rude comments from another boy had started off this day with him feeling trapped in a tunnel. Surrounded by many other kids, but yet alone.

Engage, Inspire, Lead. My thoughts on teaching young minds with purpose and passion! Tuesday, June 30, 2015. Keys are unique and have different purposes. Some are used daily to protect, to ignite, and to unlock. Others are not as important until they are needed urgently and (ironically) cannot be found. And a few are probably long forgotten, taking up space in the junk drawer. One thing all keys have in common though - they are a specific tool. For a specific purpose. No one tool that works for everyone.

Engage, Inspire, Lead. My thoughts on teaching young minds with purpose and passion! Wednesday, May 27, 2015. Stay true to your roots, but don't forget to allow. Your branches to grow wide and your leaves unfold to the sun. Time allows roots to grow deep. Underneath the surface, the roots tell so many stories. They reach far and wide, become interconnected, and help to provide the tree with life-giving water and minerals. They help to anchor the tree and provide a networked base. Roots are also incredibly.

Engage, Inspire, Lead. My thoughts on teaching young minds with purpose and passion! Sunday, March 29, 2015. Connecting the dots used to be one of my favorite preschool workbook activities. I was a pro - and it was so fun to see the bigger picture when the end dot met back at the beginning. As I get ready for a month of conferences, I look forward not only to the new learning and ideas that will be gained, but also to the connecting that I will do with some great educators. Little bit LDS Mormon, Divorcing, full time working, grab the bull by the horns Autism Mum and her exploits. Straight woman in “comfortable shoes”. I wear comfortable shoes but fancy fella’s… it is a mismatch. I like wearing comfortable shoes. There, I said it! I like wearing cargo shorts and t shirts and carrying a bookbag. Relógio do Star Wars.
