Latest bird news from Øygarden, Hordaland, Norway. Sunday, July 05, 2015. Skogsøy 05 July 2015 - SUrprisingly productive seawatch. Given the time of year and the conditions expectations were not that high. One can always hope though and a couple of hours spent seawatching from just before 0600 provided a bit of everything with seabirds, autumn migration and a rarity or two. Highlight was a flock of four Sandwich Terns. Autumn migration included 23 Shelduck gravand. A Black Guillemot teist. Still more rai...

A Chronicle of Life in the Swamp. Monday, August 25, 2003. From Orange to Lumberton. I've been transferred from Orange to the new store in Lumberton, which is scheduled to open on Friday. This week I'm working long hours getting the store ready. Posted by John @ 11:58 PM. Friday, August 22, 2003. New Herp, Etc. Down by the pond I spotted a tiny frog leaping ahead of me in the grass. We cornered it, and Troy managed to catch it (not easy; this frog could really jump - like over a yard in a single hop!

A Chronicle of Life in the Swamp. Tuesday, February 03, 2004. 2003: The Year That Was. Today I am getting new vinyl windows on the house (finally! And as I write this I am listening to the sound of hammers pounding and glass shattering in other rooms. I've been living in Southeast Texas for over a year now, so it seems like a good time to pause and reflect on the year that was, as Tom Lehrer might put it.now that I can do so from a safe distance. Thank Goodness 2003 is over! Posted by John @ 10:35 AM.

A Chronicle of Life in the Swamp. Sunday, September 28, 2003. KKK In Lumberton, Birds In My Backyard. Today the Klu Klux Klan came to Lumberton in a gray bus decorated with confederate flags (on their peace, love and understanding tour, I presume). I was stuck behind them in traffic and had to change lanes to get around them, because rascists apparently drive very slowly. I saw them pull into the Market Basket parking lot.I guess even militant white supremicists need to eat. Blue Jays have been unusually...

A Chronicle of Life in the Swamp. Monday, March 22, 2004. Spring Is In The Air. Ahspring is in the air. Warm weather is back, birds are singing, grass is growing, flowers are blooming, mosquitoes are hatching. Right now the azaleas along my driveway are in full bloom - a short-lived but glorious show of color. There's a pair of Brown Thrashers hanging around the yard and an American Goldfinch just visited my feeder. Life is good. Posted by John @ 1:57 PM. View my complete profile. The Hawk Owl's Nest.

A Chronicle of Life in the Swamp. Monday, June 30, 2003. Tropical Storm Bill and Some Bird Sightings. And then I heard a Wood Thrush singing from the direction of the pond. I managed to sneak up on the thrush and get a couple of briefs looks before it disappeared into the foliage. Other moments of zen.the Green Heron that flushed as I approached the pond; a Ground Skink glimpsed as it slithered away into the leaf litter; Chimney Swifts twittering overhead at evening.
