Improving Environmental Understanding « Christopher Conner

Environmental Communicator, Fisherman, Dad. Helping people understand the natural world that surrounds us all has always been one of my driving passions. As a child, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to spend many days mucking around the waters of the Magothy River and the Chesapeake Bay at our family’s summer cottage. While the house was far from luxurious, my experiences there nourished an ever-growing curiosity about the plants, animals and people that call the Chesapeake home. You can follow an...

Environmental Communicator, Fisherman, Dad. October 30, 2012. With Hurricane Sandy bearing down on the Chesapeake Bay — and not wanting to be surprised again by a crazy-high storm surge like we were in 2003’s Hurricane Isabel — I’ve installed a live camera looking out on the river. October 28, 2012. Those who know me best know I have a soft spot for both family and the Chesapeake Bay. On the rare occasions when those worlds colide, I pretty much can’t stop talking about it. October 27, 2012. That Chesape...

Environmental Communicator, Fisherman, Dad. November 1, 2012. Just wanted to give everyone an update that we fared well during Sandy. The Magothy River crested Tuesday morning at about three and half feet above normal, just below the top of our pier. Another foot and we would have been in trouble. Here’s what the surge looked like one river south of us in Annapolis. Superstorm Sandy storm surge in Annapolis, Md., from NOAA. You are currently browsing the Christopher Conner. Environmental Communicator, Fisherman, Dad. Throughout my career, I have always looked for new opportunities to engage people about the environment. Whether it’s through their interest in cultural, recreational, or economic concerns, environmental communicators need to move beyond the we know better than you and alarmist approaches to eliciting change. To change their views and behavior, we need to meet them at a place of their choosing with a message they are open to hearing. Andrew Revkin @ The Times.

Environmental Communicator, Fisherman, Dad. Our family has spent summers on the Magothy River since the 1940s, when my grandfather first purchased our place as a summer “shore” to escape the hot, Baltimore summers. It’s been an important part of our life ever since. With Hurricane Sandy bearing down on the Chesapeake Bay — and not wanting to be surprised again by a crazy-high storm surge like we were in 2003’s Hurricane Isabel — I’ve installed a live camera looking out on the river.
