Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell: Another Top Tip for DPM - "replica is inconsistent" on System State and Bare Metal Recovery...
http://backupexec-hell.blogspot.com/2011/05/another-top-tip-for-dpm-replica-is.html
Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell. Thursday, 12 May 2011. Another Top Tip for DPM - "replica is inconsistent" on System State and Bare Metal Recovery. I thought I'd share this Top Tip. It is reasonably well documented, but a classic thing you'd often miss. It's dead simple to sort, run Server Manager, click Add Feature, check "Windows Server Backup" and wait for it to install - job done - run a consistency check and they'll be sorted and work thereafter. Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell: DPM 2012 - no reports on backup jobs for you!
http://backupexec-hell.blogspot.com/2012/08/dpm-2012-no-reports-on-backup-jobs-for.html
Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell. Thursday, 23 August 2012. DPM 2012 - no reports on backup jobs for you! This morning we came across an interesting issue with DPM 2012, something which is really trivial, but really annoying if you don't know what is wrong! Recently I moved our DPM servers over to DPM 2012 - and was amazed by how smoothly it went (more because I'm used to upgrading Backup Exec and watching the earth cave in), and all seemed to be working well. Despite having all the ...

Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell: DPM and Manual Replicas. Not quite as intuitive as the rest of Data Protection Manager!
http://backupexec-hell.blogspot.com/2013/06/dpm-and-manual-replicas-not-quite-as.html
Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell. Saturday, 1 June 2013. DPM and Manual Replicas. Not quite as intuitive as the rest of Data Protection Manager! We don't tend to post here very often anymore, mostly because it's rare there's anything much to say since we moved away from Backup Exec (which seems to be just as bad as ever when I recently evaluated it to see if it had improved). The basic principle is that you literally "copy" the source drives files to another media - like a removable ...

Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell: Follow your own advice...
http://backupexec-hell.blogspot.com/2010/10/follow-your-own-advice.html
Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell. Wednesday, 6 October 2010. Follow your own advice. Recently I had an issue. CASO couldn't talk to all of the managed media servers (sort of making them unmanaged then.) Much muttering and fiddling later and nothing. So I try and think how to describe the exact issue, and google for it (naturally you google last after messing around because that would be akin otherwise to actually reading the manual that comes with stuff you buy). Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell: Sometimes you want Backup Exec back...
http://backupexec-hell.blogspot.com/2011/06/sometimes-you-want-backup-exec-back.html
Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell. Monday, 13 June 2011. Sometimes you want Backup Exec back. So some weeks on and DPM on the whole is everything a backup product should be. There are a few annoyances and a few things that need radical improvement, but on the most important factor - backup reliability, DPM wins hands down. All in all a bit poor and makes me want BEWS back, just for that bit anyhow. The Backup Exec Goat. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). IT Rants from Vince. 3 System...

Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell: Backup Exec Licensing
http://backupexec-hell.blogspot.com/2009/12/backup-exec-licensing.html
Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell. Tuesday, 29 December 2009. Am I the only person who thinks the licensing scheme of Backup Exec is insane. Why must there be so many options which become increasingly expensive for features that should just be included, and why exactly must we pay for enhancements which are often essentially fixes for features they never implemented properly the first time. Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell: Common DPM Errors...
http://backupexec-hell.blogspot.com/2011/05/common-dpm-errors.html
Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell. Friday, 6 May 2011. Since we've now got most of the Data Protection Manager 2010 installations done, I thought I'd share a few common issues we've come across, and the fixes. Maybe this'll save you a LOT of hassle. In our case, we had a Cluster with 2 servers, one in a Subnet (we'll call this Subnet A), another in a different subnet (Subnet B) and our DPM Servers (and the DPM AD Network) in another (Subnet C). This ia bit of an odd one and just "happ...

Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell: DPM: Error 10048 0x02740
http://backupexec-hell.blogspot.com/2012/08/dpm-error-10048-0x02740.html
Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell. Wednesday, 8 August 2012. DPM: Error 10048 0x02740. So it's been a while since we posted, and generally that's because DPM is a godsend. It almost works without attention, and apart from a few quirks we've discovered, and the odd thing that happens but isn't ACTUALLY documented anywhere sane, things are good. However yesterday a random issue cropped up which I hadn't seen before. To fix this, you can simply:. A) Stop IIS (iisreset /stop). Or in our c...

Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell: DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 upgrade...
http://backupexec-hell.blogspot.com/2012/08/dpm-2010-to-dpm-2012-upgrade.html
Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell. Tuesday, 14 August 2012. DPM 2010 to DPM 2012 upgrade. Today we decided it was time to upgrade to DPM 2012. I had written a really good post about our experience and what happened. Annoyingly, just as I went to save/publish it, the app I was using (BlogJet) decided to die and take the draft with it. So sadly you won't see that post yet…. But the good news is that unlike the blog post, the actual install of DPM 2012 went well :-). The Backup Exec Goat.

Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell: DPM and "Secondary Protection" and "Chaining"
http://backupexec-hell.blogspot.com/2011/05/dpm-and-secondary-protection-and.html
Microsoft Data Protection Heaven and Backup Exec Hell. Thursday, 5 May 2011. DPM and "Secondary Protection" and "Chaining". So first, the good news. Having rolled out DPM 2010 to our production environments, by and large all seems well, backups are completing, using less time, hassle and bandwidth overall than the previous Backup Exec solution. Basic steps are simple (after doing the normal DPM setup):. A) On the second DPM server, push the protection agent to the first. We'll see how our trial run goes.
