Images from the Fall. School begins - First day orientation. An older - younger pair-up game. Circus Smirkus did a week's residency as part of our orientation. Our hope in the beginning weeks of school is to create a strong social community of trust and respect, and to lay the groundwork for academic engagement, curiosity, risk taking, and sustained focus. Students have outside time for sports and games, sledding, and barn chores. Each group begins with a Morning Meeting to focus on community building and to orient for the day. We greet each other, exchange important news, share announcements, and discuss plans and issues that affect the group. Everyone gathers for an All School Meeting once a week. Literacy at Red Cedar. Students at Red Cedar are readers and writers, members of a literary community. They read between 20 and 80 books a year, talk about books in and out of class, plan what they will read next, and pass books from hand to hand. They create numerous pieces of writing in a range of genres that are shared in the school community and published in the Red Cedar Press. Students Perform One-Act Plays. Everyone Knows What a Dragon Looks Like. Adapted from the book by Jay Williams. Isaiah, as the old man (the dragon) greets Han, the gatekeeper of the city, played by Louis. The mandarin (Izzi), listens to the advice of the wisest of the wise men (Schuyler). The messenger (Quinn), and the old man, listen to the Head of Merchants (Henry), and the Captain of the Army (Charlie). The story is narrated by Nadine. Band members Willy and Isaac create sounds effects for the play.

Creating a Culture of Respect. How is it nurtured in school? This doesn't mean that we don't challenge our students, or say the hard things that need to be said, or hold them accountable for their actions. We do, but in a way that honors their dignity.
