Almost PhD: May 2009

Science" - as seen on a post-it note outside of SL's office. Monday, May 25, 2009. I haven’t written lately for a few reasons. First of all, my life is so mundane right now that it practically bores me to tears just to think about it, much less write about it. And secondly, I feel more and more like some sort of primal mammal that just wants to flee from the herd and gestate in peace and isolation. Less than 3 months to go. Monday, May 18, 2009. Irises, Part 4. These are more like the traditional irises ...

Science" - as seen on a post-it note outside of SL's office. Sunday, April 26, 2009. We ended up taking the plunge this weekend. A few months ago, we had headed to O’Brien Auto Park. We traded in Iris, and while I do feel like we got a fairly reasonable price, it was very sad to drive out of the lot and leave her behind, knowing we would never see her again. I am actually carrying twins that were due yesterday. From the front, I don't even look pregnant! The Prius With No Name. Friday, April 24, 2009.

Almost PhD: How I Prepared for my Dissertation Defense
http://almost-phd.ragfield.com/2009/12/how-i-prepared-for-my-dissertation.html
Science" - as seen on a post-it note outside of SL's office. Saturday, December 5, 2009. How I Prepared for my Dissertation Defense. Preparing for one’s dissertation defense while also caring for a newborn is hardly ideal, but I’m trying to do the best I can. Mainly I am just in denial about the looming defense date. Now that it’s less than a week away, there is not much more denying I can do. A lot of the time he isn’t even eating, but he doesn’t care—he just really, really. I kind of wondered if there ...

Science" - as seen on a post-it note outside of SL's office. Tuesday, August 25, 2009. Fig's birth, Part 2). This does eventually have a very happy ending, but because it involves a fair amount of unpleasantness, I might suggest that my pregnant friends not read this before giving birth. Also, if it is going to upset or offend you that I go against medical advice, don’t read any of what follows. For the set up. Now, back to the birth story. At least, I eventually stopped crying. Science" - as seen on a post-it note outside of SL's office. Sunday, December 13, 2009. So, I defended my dissertation on Friday. It went like this:. Earlier in the week, Will came down with a cold. Yes, a cold. I’m pretty sure he caught it from Rob, who caught it from the guy he shares an office with at work. I never got this cold, and I had assumed (or hoped? That Will would be okay on account of the breastfeeding. This is not entirely true, as evidenced by Will’s cold. And the poor dear could not.

Almost PhD: Cloth Mother
http://almost-phd.ragfield.com/2008/03/cloth-mother.html
Science" - as seen on a post-it note outside of SL's office. Tuesday, March 18, 2008. Just as Rob and I got ready to leave Pablo’s last night, Pablo pranced over to say goodbye—cocktail in hand—and referred to himself as my “cloth mother.”. This was so hilarious that I just about fell over laughing. What Pablo was referring to was a truly horrific study conducted by psychologist Harry Harlow. In order to commemorate my newfound determination to run marathon #7, I flew through a 16 mile training run in th...
