Puppy Of The Month Book Club: December 2016
http://puppyofthemonth.blogspot.com/2016_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, December 31, 2016. The year of our lord 2016 saw just four books discussed in these posts, and they ran the gamut. From far-flung sci-fi to whimsical fairy tales, from full blown epics to short story collections, and from long established old masters to brand spanking new authors, we've already done more in one quarter of a year than most book clubs do in a lifetime. No doubt 2017 will expand our horizons ever further. Thursday, December 29, 2016. Originally, Swan Knights Son. 160;because of th...

Puppy Of The Month Book Club: November 2016
http://puppyofthemonth.blogspot.com/2016_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, November 30, 2016. The Saga of Adalwolf. In the Pulp Revival, we talk about regressing further, to draw upon the forms and stories of the past to write new stories. "The Saga of Adalwolf" takes this idea, but goes further back than the pulps and penny dreadfuls of the late 1800s and early 1900s to the Nordic tales of a millennium and more in the past. Alone of the stories in Thune's Vision. Which leads to the most important question: is "Adalwolf" an enjoyable read? Here are a few recommendati...

The Antonelli Affair | Shoplifting in the Marketplace of Ideas

Shoplifting in the Marketplace of Ideas. December 19, 2015. December 19, 2015. A lot has been written about the Sad Puppies campaign and this year’s Hugo awards, but I thought I’d shine a light on one aspect that hasn’t gotten too much coverage, and the lessons that can be learned from it. If one takes the position that Gerrold is merely an internet blowhard, and that he doesn’t actually mean any of it to take place outside of his fevered imagination, then contacting the police over an internet cra...

Puppy Of The Month Book Club: Shambleau, Shambleau!
http://puppyofthemonth.blogspot.com/2017/01/shambleau-shambleau.html
Sunday, January 1, 2017. Each month, the books chosen by the Puppy of the Month Book Club have treated readers to an array of exotic places. We've seen anime-influenced re-imaginings of Dante's Inferno, the sun-source of reality in Amber, the lands of the medieval Norse, and entire countries robbed from reality by the elfs. This month, in C. L. Moore's Shambleau. In the meantime, here is a special treat: Northwest Smith's first adventure, "Shambleau", read by Catherine Moore herself. Nine Princes in Amber.

Puppy Of The Month Book Club: Tsundere of Joiry: Black God's Kiss
http://puppyofthemonth.blogspot.com/2017/01/tsundere-of-joiry-black-gods-kiss.html
Sunday, January 8, 2017. Tsundere of Joiry: Black God's Kiss. While I do recommend that fans of fantasy read "Black God's Kiss", as it is an evocative tale mercifully free of the modern tropes choking the genre, I found "Shambleau" to be the stronger story after the first read. But it is many current attitudes, including Pixy Fu and genre readers' growing avoidance of female writers, that may keep modern audiences from reading either. Kuroko Shirai, Pixy Fu black belt. Chyna, the Ninth Wonder of the World.

Puppy Of The Month Book Club: Spoiler Policy
http://puppyofthemonth.blogspot.com/p/spoiler-policy.html
As a book club, this blog serves as a place to get together and talk about books that we have all read together. Everyone has two full weeks to read the next month's selection, and nobody forces anyone to read these blog posts. We're going to talk about all of the book, including the surprising twists and turns and who lives and who dies. Not only don't we avoid spoilers, we actively search them out, dissect their innards, and pin them to the desk for further analysis. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
