Sylvia was born Sylvia Jessie Catherine Merrill near Port Augusta on 26 January. Aged 19, Sylvia moved to Adelaide to work in the office of close family friends the Birdseyes. She soon learns to drive the buses. Sylvia marries her childhood friend and first dancing partner Sydney Birdseye, whose father Albert runs the Birdseye bus company.
