Mangos for Breakfast

Tuesday, February 16, 2010. They even go above and beyond the duties the headmaster encourages them to undertake, paying for my groceries if they run into me at the supermarket or paying for my angkot (mini bus) if they happen to be riding in the same one. As you can see, I owe a lot to these teachers. So, when I started teaching at MAN Limboto and they asked if I would have an English course after school on Wednesdays for the teachers, I naturally obliged. It was the least I could do. Mangos for Breakfast: November 2009

http://sarahmecholsky.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Monday, November 30, 2009. So I feel as though I should mention here that I just found out that I’ll be doing Teach for America next year in South Louisiana. Hopefully (Insuh allah) I’ll be in the city of Baton Rouge with my brother Kris, Ellen and Eliza! It will be great to be near them. But Teach for America is really going to be hard. It was very exciting for me to have been accepted into a movement that does so much good and is so competitive. Would the students listen to me? Labels: Teach for America.

Mangos for Breakfast: Mati Lampu

http://sarahmecholsky.blogspot.com/2009/12/mati-lampu.html

Thursday, December 17, 2009. As I’m writing this on my laptop in almost complete darkness, I realize that I have failed to mention one of the annoyances that almost all Indonesians experience. It is an annoyance that we all, rich or poor, bule or Indonesian, politician or teacher must deal with while living and working in Indonesia. This annoyance is a little thing we call mati lampu, or dead light. In their defense, there are a lot of pressing problems, and so these outages continue. Miss you too much!

Mangos for Breakfast: October 2009

http://sarahmecholsky.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Wednesday, October 21, 2009. Why teaching is hard. October 19, 2009. Really though, I am beginning to have such a deep respect for the way my high school teachers commanded our respect, and guided our interest in the direction of their lesson. What skill and what prowess they all demonstrated! This is a time tested skill that I know I can’t acquire after just a week or even just a year of teaching. 8221; or , “Do you work for the state? The student who stood and spoke to the class, clearly did not expect...

Palembangin': April 2010

http://katieinindo.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Friday, April 30, 2010. Oops, my apologies. Rudi’s behavior isn’t uncommon at all, though. All of my teachers smack students when they talk out of turn or play with their Rubik’s Cubes instead of listening. After a particularly frustrating class, I came back to the teachers’ lounge and said I was having some serious trouble getting kids to pay attention. “You have to pinch them,” Sry says. The thing is, it doesn’t. So I said thanks, but he...

Palembangin': December 2009

9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Saturday, December 26, 2009. A bathroom blog. Toilet talk? Please accept my sincerest apologies, because I have been holding out on you. It occurred to me recently that I have yet to share with you the mildly terrifying adventure that is Indonesian bathrooms. I should have known some bathroom challenge was looming in my future long before I set foot in this country. Does that imply something about other toilets? I think I shrugged. A porce...

Palembangin': Marhabah celebration

http://katieinindo.blogspot.com/2010/05/marhabah-celebration.html

9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Sunday, May 23, 2010. Just five days left in Palembang, and I’m still having new experiences every day. Well, not. Day, but close. This weekend I went to a Marhabah celebration at Rudi’s family’s house. As a reminder, Rudi is another English teacher at my school. Technically, that’s when you’re supposed to have the ceremony, too—when the baby is a week old. But most people cut the baby’s hair off at a week and w...The ceremony at Rudi&#821...

Palembangin': The Final Score

9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Friday, June 11, 2010. I’m home now. It’s wonderful and a little sad at the same time. My friend Jeff Laub sent me Bill Bryson’s A Walk in the Woods, about hiking the Appalachian Trail, and being home reminds me a little of Bryson’s experience when he and his friend finally decided to go home:. 8220;‘Do you want to get a Coke? 8217; I said to Katz. There was a machine by the gas station door. 1 Take lots of pictures. Well, I’m not fl...

9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Wednesday, October 28, 2009. There is a bug hiding under my 4 key. Want to watch me try to kill him? He isn’t dead. He’s trying to make it to 5. He’s mocking me. Which leads me to an interesting question: why are there so many bugs on my desk? Yeah, the cockroaches and lizards suck, but I think everyone here will agree that the real nasty things are the tiny little ants. Thankfully, for the most part, they go where the food is. Obviously, ...

9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Friday, February 26, 2010. They took everything.". The flash on my digital camera hadn’t been working very well, so after Christmas Mom sent me back with one of her old cameras. I loaned it to my Indonesian friend Yanti for a family visit she’d recently made, and I met up with her on Wednesday night to get it back. Luckily, she’d forgotten to bring it. The night was pretty typical. We decided to stop by 15 minutes. Yanti and I like to sing...

Palembangin': March 2010

http://katieinindo.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Wednesday, March 17, 2010. Bumpy buses and violent volcanoes. As Christine put it, and I'm paraphrasing a little, "This is an endless summer filled with endless bus rides." So true. What's wrong with me? We had to fix that. Rie made this. It's a reference to the fact. That our "four-hour" trip took seven. We arrived hungry, tired, and thankful. We at least made it in time for the sunset. It doesn't look so scary now, does it? We watched mo...

9 months in Palembang, South Sumatra in Indonesia on a Fulbright. Monday, May 24, 2010. Every Saturday we’re in Palembang, Raj and I do an hour-long radio show called “Smart Up your Life.” The US Embassy in Jakarta sponsors the program, and they pick a weekly topic and send us a five-minute long sketch we play on the air. Testing, testing. 1, 2, 3. We have topics like:. Why don’t Americans like to make small talk with people on the street like Indonesians do? Are Indonesians being rude when they walk up ...

THE ADVENTURES OF SARS

THE ADVENTURES OF SARS. Wednesday, June 5, 2013. Sunday, March 4, 2012. Thought I'd share a few shots of life down in our neighborhood. Eddie Izzard at the Hollywood Bowl! Cheering on the Chivas. Hangin' by the pool with Justin, Hollie. On the Helipad at Children's Hospital, waiting for a patient. A gorgeous Santa Monica day. Exploring Culver City with Maya. The much anticipated "carmaggedon" didn't exactly happen. I've never seen the 405 so empty! Dog days with Wally and Doc. Pieter: master bird chaser.
