Brains beats tentacles, any day | Tim's Boardgames

Tim's Board games. Brains beats tentacles, any day. I played an epic game with the Cthulhu Cultists against the Miskatonic University Explorers. It lasted hours. There was lots going on and the game swung back and forth. At various points it looked like either side could have won. Both these decks are extremely fun to play. It seemed that every turn something interesting happened. All of this happened at the end if the MU player’s turn, and now it is the Cultist player’s turn. The Ruinous Star Spawn remo...

Tim's Board games. I didn’t get any extra ships to go with my core set, but I did get the ‘Rogues and Villains’ expansion which is a bunch of extra little squadron ships, including the Millenium Falcon! These work the same as the X-Wing and TIE Fighter squadrons, except each is a single ship. They are all famous ships from the Star Wars expanded universe, and they all also appear in the X-Wing game (in larger models). These are the bits that make up a squadron ship. I like the idea of having a variety of...

Nothing up my sleeves | Tim's Boardgames

Tim's Board games. Nothing up my sleeves. Now that I have created a bunch of decks for the Call of Cthulhu card game, I thought it would be a good idea to protect them in card sleeves. I bought a bunch of Cthulhu art sleeves a while back. These were done by Fantasy Flight (same as the recent Netrunner sleeves that I double-bought). I put my new Syndicate criminals deck in the sleeves with the picture from the Arkham Horror box. I put my Cthulhu cultist deck in the Cthulhu sleeves. The Old One in Red.

Tim's Board games. I like traffic lights, but only when they're. I am trying to decide whether to get the Star Wars Imperial Assault game. This is the one with the tactical miniatures combat, which sounds great since I think there is very little that can beat the look of painted figures moving around a map. Especially Star Wars figures. I also took the opportunity to sort out the Gears of War components properly. More sorting, yay! It has been a while since I played this, so I started with the first miss...

Does Han shoot first? | Tim's Boardgames

Tim's Board games. Does Han shoot first? I opened up my Millennium Falcon. This is one of the large-sized ships in the X-Wing Miniatures Game. It comes in its own big box along with the usual mass of bits. It is a gorgeous model, very nicely painted like all the other ships. It is much bigger than the X-Wings and TIE Fighters, and is strictly to scale. The little antenna dish moves up and down! It looks great on its stand. Vrooooooommm! Modifications are really neat, because any ship can use a Modificati...

Tim's Board games. Red Five Standing By. I have decided it is now time to start getting excited about the new Star Wars film and a return to the world of the original trilogy. Hence I spent some time in a Barnes and Noble buying a bunch of sets for the X-Wing Miniatures Game. I got a Core Set, an additional X-Wing, a TIE Interceptor and a TIE Advanced. And a Millennium Falcon. The ships are awesome. They are made to scale based on the models from the original films and are very nicely painted. Flying aro...

Tim's Board games. ˈgɒθɪk adjective: portentously gloomy or horrifying. I played another couple of games of Dark Gothic, the Spooky Hollow deck-building game. This time I played with two random heroes and drew Charlotte Dubois the cutthroat smuggler, and Adrianna of Zartha the foreign traveler. Charlotte Dubois and Adrianna. Charlotte’s main ability is that she draws seven cards each turn. This is a very powerful ability as you always want more points and so every card counts. Posted in Blog Posts. In th...

X-Wing Miniatures Game | Tim's Boardgames

Tim's Board games. I don’t know if anyone remembers the old Star Wars Dark Forces and Jedi Knight computer games, but they have included Kyle Katarn’s ship in the X-Wing miniatures game. His ship was the Moldy Crow, piloted by his partner Jan Ors. He didn’t do much flying in it. Jan would pick him up and drop him off between missions while he ran around shooting stormtroopers or chopping at Sith. Posted in Blog Posts. October 25, 2015. To B or not to B-Wing.
