About | Simply Cooking

Life is difficult. But cooking is easy! This blog is officially closed. Please visit my main blog at shannonturlington.com. I used to think that I couldn’t cook, or to be more precise, that I couldn’t cook anything that didn’t begin life in a jar or the freezer section of the supermarket. As I got more interested in food and wine, I began experimenting and reading cookbooks — and I discovered the secret that no one tells you: Cooking is easy! 8211;Shannon (shannon.turlington at gmail.com). Thoughts on Meal Planning | Simply Cooking

https://simplycooking.wordpress.com/2013/10/08/thoughts-on-meal-planning

Life is difficult. But cooking is easy! Thoughts on Meal Planning. I’ve gone back and forth on the question of how much meal planning to do for everyday cooking, or whether a plan is even needed. I’ve tried lots of approaches, but I’ve finally come back to the opinion that it is best to have a plan, albeit a flexible one. Next, I tried a looser menu plan in which we had roughly the same meal on the same night of the week. So Monday was chicken night, Tuesday was frittata, Wednesday was tacos, and so ...

Blog Neglect and Corn Chowder | Simply Cooking

Life is difficult. But cooking is easy! Blog Neglect and Corn Chowder. I certainly have been neglecting this blog, haven’t I? Speaking of photos, my husband has taken up photography as a hobby. If he wanted to do some food photography, I would happily showcase his work on this blog.). The second recipe was in. I fried 3 strips of bacon. Until crispy and put them on paper towels to drain. I put a spoonful of the bacon grease into my soup pot, along with about half an onion, diced,. I use the word. To serv...

Credo | Simply Cooking

https://simplycooking.wordpress.com/simple-cooking-credo

Life is difficult. But cooking is easy! These are the rules of simply cooking, boiled down to the essentials, that I try to live and cook by. Keep it simple — cooking should not be stressful. Practice portion control; servings should be about the size of your fist. Practice balance; the plate should be protein, carbohydrate and vegetables and/or fruits. When eating meat, eat lean: chicken, turkey and seafood. Buy the best ingredients you can afford. Eat sustainably as much as possible. The recipe doesn&#...

Clifford Bay 2009 Sauvignon Blanc | SaltandCoffee.com

https://saltandcoffee.wordpress.com/2010/03/31/clifford-bay-2009-sauvignon-blanc

Clifford Bay 2009 Sauvignon Blanc. March 31, 2010 at 5:09 pm. Bought this at Harris Teeter. This has a very pronounced pear flavor on the front and tapers to almost nothing on the back end. Sort of like drinking pear juice. We’ll pass on this going forward. Entry filed under: Uncategorized. 1 Comment Add your own. February 13, 2011 at 8:15 pm. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. First Wine Post | SaltandCoffee.com

https://saltandcoffee.wordpress.com/2009/12/17/first-wine-post

December 17, 2009 at 10:52 pm. The first wine worth mentioning may be the best wine I’ve ever had, Chateau de Chamirey 2005. Drinking this wine is like drinking chocolate raspberries that smooth out to a mild finish. This makes for an oddly rich and smooth combination and I think would please people who like a big Pinot as well as those who prefer a softer, fruitier Pinot. Entry filed under: Uncategorized. Good French Pinot under $10. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.

March 31, 2010 at 5:07 pm. Bought this at Harris Teeter. This is a very round red wine that’s consistently medium bodied on the front and the back. Entry filed under: Uncategorized. Clifford Bay 2009 Sauvignon Blanc. 1 Comment Add your own. April 1, 2010 at 10:43 pm. Cheers…I fell in love with Malbecs while business tripping it in Buenos Aires a few years ago. Prosecco | SaltandCoffee.com

https://saltandcoffee.wordpress.com/2010/01/23/prosecco-2

January 23, 2010 at 8:30 pm. Ok, we have a new favorite… Il Cortigiano is about $10 at Total Wine. It comes in varying types of sparkles, we go with lightly sparkled (aka frizzante). This prosecco is the perfect medium that’s not too sweet and not too dry. I think we’ll go with this as our house prosecco. Entry filed under: Uncategorized. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Good French Pinot under $10. January 16, 2010 at 4:05 pm. Ropiteau 2008 from Total Wine was about $9. It has an earthy smoothness. Not very fruity but a very easy moderate Pinot to drink. Skip to main content. Skip to secondary content. September 23, 2012. You know when you find something that works and you wish there was some sort of homeschool parent bat signal you could flip on and spread the word? This is mine. A couple years ago we suffered from a motivation problem in the school room. Son didn’t want to complete workbook pages, I was losing the heart to fight about it. Then one day I found Sue Patrick’s website. In the post about our school room here. 2 Have a good babysitter? Offer...

I’ve previously posted about the panko crusted tilapia from costco. We try to keep a box in the freezer for those nights when you feel like a quick and easy meal. I prefer my fried fish with tartar sauce and my wife prefers cocktail sauce. Both sauces are extremely easy to make and taste as good or better than you could buy at the store. Here’s how we whip them up. April 17, 2009 at 8:32 pm. Amazing Carrot Cake Cupcakes. Usually there is something about a recipe that I would change, but these are utter p...

Prosecco! | SaltandCoffee.com

https://saltandcoffee.wordpress.com/2010/01/16/prosecco

January 16, 2010 at 4:09 pm. Good friends of ours brought over a bottle of prosecco and we were immediately hooked. This Italian wine is bubbly but not too dry and not too sweet. It’s a bit like drinking a carbonated Sauvignon Blanc. Prosecco is a great pre dinner drink but the best part is that it’s a great wine with Asian foods (my favorite). We’re now on the hunt for a good Prosecco, the Trader Joe’s was a bit too sweet for our taste. Entry filed under: Uncategorized. Good French Pinot under $10.

When making caramel, the temperature you cook it to determines whether it is a thin (220) or thick sauce (240) or a soft (260)or hard (300) candy. A candy thermometer is a must, but you can get one pretty much anywhere that has kitchen equipment, including most grocery stores for just a few dollars. The Ingredients are very simple:.

Menu Plan Monday April 30, 2012. Posted by simplykerri in Menu Plan Monday. I didn’t get a chance to make my pesto last week because the basil went bad and I didn’t have time to go to the grocery store and get more, so it’s on the menu again this week. I am determined to make my own pesto :) The Chili Rellanos turned out great. They will definitely be on the menu in the near future. My menu is only 1/2 planned right now because homework has taken over. Supper: YOYO – Plenty of leftovers. Supper: Pesto pa...
