Sniffing the snowdrops: November 2009

http://www.sniffingthesnowdrops.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Monday, 16 November 2009. Penguin political correctness goes AWOL. Picture from Spiegel online). From the Spiegel weekly news. Yes Sandy the penguin became smitten with her keeper Peter Vollbracht. But the fickle creature lost interest when Vollbracht was off sick and hunted out another lover. Once Tom, a real penguin, died the slippery little trollop. Made a beeline again for the keeper. Some lonely, recently widowed penguin. Would Der Spiegel have used such language for a male penguin? But had never co...

Sniffing the snowdrops: The Woman in White - Or 'Marian Halcombe - star in hiding'

http://www.sniffingthesnowdrops.blogspot.com/2010/05/woman-in-white-or-marian-halcombe-star.html

Saturday, 15 May 2010. The Woman in White - Or 'Marian Halcombe - star in hiding'. One night Walter Hartwright meets and helps a strange woman in white, this chance meeting leads to a melodrama of intrigues and investigation: The Woman in White has many of the traits of what would become the 'mystery novel' and is widely recognised as a classic. And so it proved. Is the first proper detective novel and The Woman in White. If your creator wasn't dead I'd be demanding you get a sequel.

Sniffing the snowdrops: Forgettably nameless

http://www.sniffingthesnowdrops.blogspot.com/2010/03/forgettably-nameless.html

Sunday, 28 March 2010. A Nameless Witch by A.Lee Martinez. After the horror of trawling through 600 pages of pretentious Norwegian post-modernism I was delighted to read this book that the ringbearer bought for me. To be honest I'd recommend this to an adolescent, who needs something easy and enjoyable to ease them into reading. Or alternately someone who is suffering from Wergeland. Exhaustion. A nameless witch isn't unique, but it's fun and (very) easy on the brain. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Tomsk79: Life in a marginal: endgame

http://tomsk79.blogspot.com/2015/05/life-in-marginal-endgame.html

Thursday, 7 May 2015. Life in a marginal: endgame. Lest we forget that it's polling day today, the Lib Dems got up early to remind us:. The scan cannot adequately convey the sheer size and weight of this greeting. It was impossible to see the hallway beneath it. If the election were decided purely on last day polling reminder card area, the Lib Dems would be odds on for a landslide. The Labour effort looked a bit feeble in comparison:. So what was the result of all these months of persuasion? Attack of t...

Tomsk79: March 2015

http://tomsk79.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 31 March 2015. Life in a marginal: a brief guide to Manchester Withington. It's therefore going to take more than a gazillion leaflets for Leech to hold on to the seat, and I wouldn't put any money on him doing so, but the party is clearly putting in significant resources here, so the local results may not be as predictive as you might expect. When I say like, I mean really really like. We received yet another Lib Dem Focus today, the first from plain un-suffixed John Leech (TMFKAOMIW):. I parti...

Tomsk79: March 2012

http://tomsk79.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, 11 March 2012. A Lib Dem logic question. Is not calling on peers to support a bill equivalent to calling on peers not to support a bill? Opinions don't appear not to not undiffer. Saturday, 10 March 2012. How a Lib Dem meltdown could benefit the liberal left. At this weekend's spring conference, Lib Dem activists have perhaps their last chance. Unless . perhaps the Lib Dem parliamentary party really are as decent as Tim Farron claims. Perhaps they're acting for the greater good of the liberal left.

Tomsk79: January 2015

http://tomsk79.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 14 January 2015. Amid the impressive and heart-warming displays of solidarity, there has sadly also been a lot of rubbish written about Charlie Hebdo and its cartoons on the English-speaking web over the past week (I've seen the beautiful term 'anglosplaining' used for this phenomenon). Rather than add to the pile, here are some links to pieces doing the rounds that I've found genuinely informative. Two of them are by actual French people. On the French satirical tradition:. Bottom line: Charl...

Tomsk79: Life no longer in a marginal

http://tomsk79.blogspot.com/2015/05/life-no-longer-in-marginal.html

Friday, 8 May 2015. Life no longer in a marginal. Withington was a very comfortable win. Mysterious Independent: 0.1%. The outcome was remarkably close to Ashcroft's poll. From almost a year ago. If that was a true snapshot then the Lib Dems' impressive campaign was worth all of 2% extra on their vote. It appears their famous incumbency bonus vanished this time, in line with the many other Lib Dem losses around the country. The Predict-o-Matic 5000. Clearly requires some adjustment. Life in a marginal.

http://tomsk79.blogspot.com/2015_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, 12 July 2015. Just when you thought it was safe to check the mail. Yes, the Lib Dems are back in the game! And there's a proper old-fashioned dodgy bar chart on the back to prove it:. PS: Slightly embarrassed that Leech has got back in touch before I got round to writing my very important reflections on being a stay-at-home Dad. I blame the pressure of no longer being a stay-at-home Dad. Labels: life in a marginal. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Adventures in paternity leave. Life in a marginal.

Tuesday, 28 April 2015. Life in a marginal: still uncanvassed. Plus I'm a stay-at-home Dad so I'm in all day and can even offer a traditional baby-kissing opportunity. Roll up! But her face is covered in porridge! Do you want my vote or not? The leaflets keep on coming of course. Mrs Tomsk has received a personal letter addressed personally to her from John Leech. It's all but identical to the one I was sent except that the controversial opening paragraph. In window poster news, a Green Party poster has ...

Tomsk79: Life in a marginal: the dark arts

http://tomsk79.blogspot.com/2015/05/life-in-marginal-dark-arts.html

Tuesday, 5 May 2015. Life in a marginal: the dark arts. Hmm An anonymous brown envelope arrives containing all kinds of terrible revelations about Labour. Who could it be from? I'm guessing it's not from Labour. I see it's very positive about the Lib Dems' record in government on the back. Could this be a clue as to the senders? They admit all in the very small print at the bottom. I should have guessed from the paper. Labels: life in a marginal. 5 May 2015 at 21:54. 6 May 2015 at 09:41. Tuttle Learning ...

Sniffings of a Slugdog

Sniffings of a Slugdog. Sunday, July 10, 2011. I heard a wise elderly woman asked today if she could share in two words some important life-lesson she's learned. She said, "Don't wait.". For the kids to leave. For a better job. Till you get older. Till your health changes. In other words, don't wait for things to be just right. They'll never be. Life is difficult. But it is whatever you make of it. Choose to make the most of it. Don't wait. Love the life out of everyday. Friday, July 1, 2011. Perhaps I'm...

Unplayable from start to finish, bouncing off tackles, running at defenders, and constantly on the lookout for that moment of innovation to unlock the Premier League’s meanest defense. Last year, a moment of individual brilliance from Paul Scholes put United above Barca in a second. A year on, 93 minutes of footballing perfection undid everything. The gulf, if you’re a United fan, was terrifying. Labels: big ronnie little ronnie. 14 April, 2009.
