SS Explorer Preservation Society. History of the SS Explorer. Built to the order of the Scottish Home Department, the story of ‘Explorer’. Began when she was launched on the 21st June 1955 by Lady Rachel Stuart, wife of the then Secretary of State for Scotland. The ‘FRS Explorer’. SS Explorer Preservation Society. We are please to learn that the SS Freshspring, a former RMAS, steam driven water tanker is receiving some loving care. The Freshspring was completed in 1946 and seen service in Malta until the mid 70's when she was withdrawn. The ship has been languishing in a mud berth on the River Severn for circa 25 years. Several enthusiasts are currently forming a preservation society with the aim to restoring the Freshspring.
