IOS 84, the windows vista of ipad. I like to listen to music while coding, with my normal strategy being "on a monday, pick an artist, leave them playing all week". It's a low-effort policy. Except iOS 8.4 has ruined my workflow. And before anyone says "hey, you just hit the repeat-per-track option", here's the fun bit: it switched from repeat playlist to repeat track, all on its own. That implies a state change, either in some local variable (how? Siri (and Cortana, OK google and Alexa) are all showing ...

Steve Loughran: 2014-12

http://steveloughran.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html

What have we learned this week? The Sony/N Korea spat is fascinating in its implications. Never make an enemy of a nation state. Always encrypt HDDs with per-user keys. Any IT keys need to be locked down extra-hard. Never store passwords in plaintext files. At the very least, encrypt your word documents. Never email passwords to others. That goes for wifi passwords, incidentally, as children may come across unattended gmail inboxes and search for the words "wifi password". Attack on the Iranian nuclear e...

InfoSec risks of android travel applications. I was offline for 95% of the xmas break, instead investing my keyboard time into: (a) the exercises in Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. And (b) writing some stuff on the implications of the Sony debacle for my home network security architecture. I'm going to start posting the latter articles in an out-of-order sequence, with this post: InfoSec risks of android travel applications. Normally the fact that Android apps can ask and get near-unli...

Build tools as Proof Engines. Someone has put up a thoughtful post on whether you can view make as a proof system. I thought about it and have come up with a conclusion: maybe in the past —but not any more. As background, it's worth remembering. I did "write the book on Ant". Early last year, in my spare time, I formally specified the Hadoop FS APIs. In Spivey's Z notation. Albeit in a Python syntax. I went on to specify the desired behaviour of the YARN registry as a TLA specification. Is the most usefu...

Steve Loughran: Book Review, Hadoop Security, and distributed security in general

http://steveloughran.blogspot.com/2015/07/book-review-hadoop-security-and.html

Book Review, Hadoop Security, and distributed security in general. I've been reading the new ORA book, Hadoop Security. By Ben Spivey and Joey Echeverria. There's not many reviews up there, so I'll put mine up. Reasonable intro to kerberos hadoop clusters. Covers the identity - cluster user mapping problem. ACLs in HDFS, YARN &c covered nicely —explanation and configuration. Has Sentry coverage, if that matters to you. Has some good "putting it all together" articles. ACLs are covered nicely too, while e...

Steve Loughran: Why is so much of my life wasted waiting for test runs to complete?

http://steveloughran.blogspot.com/2015/06/why-is-so-much-of-my-life-wasted.html

Why is so much of my life wasted waiting for test runs to complete? Anyone who follows me. On Strava can infer when those runs take place as if its a long one, I've nipped down to the road bike on the turbo trainer and done a bit of exercise while waiting for the results. Which is all well and good except for one point: why do I have to wait so long. Why do I have to wait until the entire test run is completed for those results to appear? A hard-to-identify problem becomes a "very slow to identify proble...

I got a new job, I'm with the same girl, and I almost died

https://penguinsinabox.com/2014/01/28/new-happenings.html

Penguins in a Box. I got a new job, I'm with the same girl, and I almost died. It’s been in the back of my mind for quite some time now to get back on here the start writing some more. Sadly, I typically psych myself out instead and end up with nothing. Luckily, I guess you can call it luck, I’ve had quite a tumultuous past six months. Back in October of 2013, I joined Hortonworks. Looking back, it still feels surreal, dreamlike even. Since graduating from RPI. Up the road to the hospital I went. Aft...

Up and Running

https://penguinsinabox.com/projects/2011/03/09/up-and-running.html

Penguins in a Box. So, I FINALLY have something that resembles a working website. After moving my server from an old/crappy machine to a linode768 (shameless plug: if you are interested in getting a Linode. Of your own, please use my referral code. I decided I needed to do something more creative/fun/exciting than the Drupal instance I had running before. I decided to write my own mini-blog in Django. Posted: 09 Mar 2011. SpamMap

Penguins in a Box. The solution I have is to use Fail2ban. Which monitors the system log for failed SSH attempts and will automatically lock out these IP addresses (using iptables) for a configurable amount of time. After a host gets locked out, I get an email letting me know the IP and the result of a WHOIS lookup. So, I have all these fun IP addresses and registered addresses of "people" I don't like. So what did I do? I counted them all up, and threw their information on a map that I can look at!

If Only I Knew This Shit In College

Penguins in a Box. If Only I Knew This Shit In College. Tends to be a bit of a time-waster for me these days, but, every now and again, I come across something that’s a real gem. This time it happened to be a presentation from Zach Holman. If I only knew this shit in college. I won’t summarize it so as to not bias your opinion and take-away from the source. But, wow. I don’t think I’ve read something that has hit so close to home in a while. Posted: 29 Mar 2013. Tweets by @josh elser.

New Platform

Penguins in a Box. Goodbye Django, Hello Jekyll. A little backstory, I first made this little site when I migrated off old physical hardware I had (at my parent’s house I believe it was? And instead bought a Linode. At the time, I had done more in Python than Ruby and was tired of PHP, so I figured I’d use Django to just roll my own little site. Partially from an engineering/learning standpoint, and the rest coming from a I don’t to deal with Wordpress’ issues standpoint. Posted: 09 Feb 2013.
