THE AFRICAN SCENE

Friday, April 15, 2011. Cotonou, Benin Monday March 14 2011. Sailing into the port, we saw a lot of ships coming and going - this was a loaded container ship heading in to unload - one of many. We were greeted at the dock by a local dance troupe with two men on stilts and one youngster hidden in a white feathery costume. Here's one of the men on stilts - they were quite talented and struck some clever poses. While I was watching the 'goings on' on the dock, a motorcycle came zooming down to the ship and ...

THE AFRICAN SCENE: Limbe, Cameroon Saturday 12 March 2011

http://theafricanscene.blogspot.com/2011/04/limbe-cameroon-saturday-12-march-2011.html

Wednesday, April 13, 2011. Limbe, Cameroon Saturday 12 March 2011. We were going to go to Equatorial Guinea but were advised by the US Consul that we weren't welcome there and he strongly advised against our trying to dock. We, therefore, spent two days at Limbe. I got a great shot today of Mount Cameroon, the houses on the mountain side and the small island just offshore. This is one of the many churches in Limbe - I took this photo from the ship. Here's one of the local outdoor cafes. DO YOU KNOW that ...

THE AFRICAN SCENE: June 2010

http://theafricanscene.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 20, 2010. I think I should have posted my photos in reverse order so I can end with the animal pics - my favorites. But now all I'm left with are the people pics - the four of us and others. This is when we first started our safaris . in Botswana . all raring to go! The weather was great but they'd had an unusual amount of rain and the Okavango was flooded more than usual. So two heavenly hunks came and carried us one by one to another vehicle. This is Paula! What a lovely man he is. Her...

THE AFRICAN SCENE: Luanda, Angola Friday March 4 2011

http://theafricanscene.blogspot.com/2011/04/luanda-angola-friday-march-4-2011.html

Sunday, April 3, 2011. Luanda, Angola Friday March 4 2011. Luanda is the capital of Angola with a population of over 5 million. Most of the Portuguese left when the civil war started which left the city in crisis because there weren't many people capable of efficiently running the infrastructure which the Portuguese left. Cubans who came to fight in the civil war, took over a lot of those responsibilities. In the city there isn't room to set up stalls like we've seen in the suburbs so the vendors set the...

THE AFRICAN SCENE: Sao Tome, Monday March 7 2011

http://theafricanscene.blogspot.com/2011/04/sao-tome-monday-march-7-2011.html

Tuesday, April 5, 2011. Sao Tome, Monday March 7 2011. We sailed across the Equator at 3:00 am today - what a shame it was so early we couldn't have a party. March 6th we spent sailing north all day but arriving in Sao Tome/Principe (two small islands that make one country) made it all worth while. They were first inhabited by the Portuguese in the late 1400s and were one of the first African countries to embrace Democracy. We were heading for a beautiful waterfall when we saw this 'meeting' of taxis in ...

THE AFRICAN SCENE: Principe, Tuesday March 8 2011

http://theafricanscene.blogspot.com/2011/04/principe-tuesday-march-8-2011.html

Tuesday, April 5, 2011. Principe, Tuesday March 8 2011. Principe is the smaller of the 2 islands comprising Sao Tome/Principe. The island's area is about 53 sq. miles and has a population of around 5,000. It is very reminiscent of the south pacific islands or the Hawaiian Islands of old. At the start of the day, we were visited by several local fisherman who were offering various fish and fruit in trade for big plastic containers or other items of use to them. The beach was warm sand and I truly felt lik...

The African Sage

Thursday, 15 September 2011. Jim and Jill Latham. Wednesday, 3 August 2011. Kilimanjaro 1925 climb by Kingsley and Stella Latham. In any event, Don had to wait a year to make his successful climb. My mother’s account starts by saying:. We arrived in Moshi at six in the morning and hoped to get a vision of the mountain to put us in heart. We were not granted it – all we could see was low wooded hills topped by banks of low grey cloud, and Moshi all red dust and dull looking, beside us. It wa...This is not...
