About the Project

If you have a classroom of students and would like to participate in our project, please contact C. J. Thompson at the following email address. Our mission has two parts. The first is to promote inquiry-based scientific exploration. To this end we would like to give students the opportunity to collect authentic data on a natural phenomenon (shadows) so that they can analyze the data, determine patterns, and make predictions. Shadow Length

For this project we will always record shadow lengths as a percentage. If a shadow is twice as long as the height of the object that made the shadow, we would record the shadow length as 200(%). If the shadow is half as long as the height of the object, we would record that as 50(%). Calculating the percentage of an objects height its shadow represents can be done easily using a simple formula. All you need is the length of the shadow. And the height of the object.

The next bit of data you need to collect is your latitude. This is a number that represents one of imaginary lines on the earth. The equator is represented by zero (0).
