Buckwheat to Butter: November 2012
http://buckwheattobutter.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
The many roads to health. Friday, November 16, 2012. Winter Salad, California Style. Than I ever care to see again, our winter garden is leafy, spicy and growing at the rate of a full salad bowl every other day. Like I said, lucky. When I first lived in the Bay Area, years ago, I worked for a dear friend at The Gardener. In Berkeley. The lessons I learned from her are innumerable, and among them was how to eat a persimmon. Winter Salad with Persimmons and Pomegranate. A handful of really good spinach*.

Buckwheat to Butter: Grown Up Rice
http://buckwheattobutter.blogspot.com/2013/10/grown-up-rice.html
The many roads to health. Tuesday, October 8, 2013. Confession. I love white rice with ketchup mixed into it. It's a dirty secret from my childhood. It's comfort in a bowl- slightly chewy, soft, hot, a bit sweet. I eat with a spoon. It's even better topped with a fried egg. Nutritional value of said dish without the egg? Yeesh I won't even try to quantify it. Last week I had my nose in Yottam Ottolenghi's great cookbooks, Plenty. I spent a week making his recipes- green gazpacho. Serves 4 as a side dish.

Buckwheat to Butter: September 2013

The many roads to health. Monday, September 23, 2013. Roasted Pumpkin Soup with Pepitas. The deep smells of roasting- garlic, pumpkin, sizzling oil- level me. Then again the routine motions: scrape, stir, blend, stir. As night falls I ladle myself a bowl. Each velvety bite is a dropping in, a slowing down. I can feel my feet against the rag rug and the ground against my feet. If only for a moment, the quiet comes. I am still. Roasted Pumpkin Soup with Pepitas. 4 cloves garlic, peeled. 1 T coconut oil.

The many roads to health. Saturday, September 29, 2012. Waking up from Routine. Photo by Ann Grinnell. Being in the moment with all the senses engaged. Routine can make our worlds small, the focus narrow. For the past few months I have been waking up early in the morning (against my instinct to hit snooze for the fourth time) to write for a while before my day of DOING THINGS. Outside instead of looking. At the outside. It was a transformative experience. I felt- pardon the terrible cliche- alive. I don'...

Buckwheat to Butter: May 2013
http://buckwheattobutter.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
The many roads to health. Tuesday, May 28, 2013. Potage Santé aka Green Soup. Yesterday we had the first rainy day in Sonoma in months. The sky was a smudge against the bleached hills, and while it never poured, a steady drizzle made it just cold enough to let it settle in the bones. In that damp afternoon, I went to the garden, picked a bunch of kale and uncovered startlingly red potatoes, gleaming like garnets in the black loam. And sat down to a real meal by myself. It truly was health soup. N...1 med...

Buckwheat to Butter: August 2013
http://buckwheattobutter.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
The many roads to health. Sunday, August 18, 2013. Slow Roasted Gigante Beans with Tomato and Artichoke. There are few things I love more than a summer garden bounty. A unique excitement comes over me when I step out of my door and walk a few feet into the garden to determine what I will eat for my next meal. The part of my brain that requires tangible results, proof of patience or of hard work or of quantifiable value, really loves gardening. The carrot patch is full of weeds? Quality. They are deli...
