Graphing Activity | The Virtual Image
https://thevirtualimage.wordpress.com/2012/09/17/graphing-activity
September 17, 2012. I posted a photo on my 180 blog last week showing some graphs my conceptual students had to graph by hand, based on data I gave them. @WillyB asked about the activity, so I decided to write about it. 1) A cheerleader is measuring the time it takes for a white carnation flower to turn red when the stem is placed in red dye. She tries 6 different stem lengths. Stem length (cm) time (minutes). Concentration (ppm) number of cells (cells). Day of the month (days) amount of rain (cm). You a...
Difficulties | The Virtual Image
https://thevirtualimage.wordpress.com/2013/03/10/difficulties
March 10, 2013. I seriously need to start posting here more often! I have a student who is a semifinalist. He scored high enough on the AAPT’s “F=ma” exam to be invited to take the next test, the exam that will choose the potential members of the US Physics team. The exam needs to be taken by March 22. It is six questions, and 3 hours long. My student and I have been working every day after school on the questions from previous versions of this exam. The solutions are freely available. Good luck to my st...
We would create systems to ensure… | The Virtual Image

We would create systems to ensure…. September 1, 2012. So, the handout:. If we really mean it when we say we want all students to learn, certainly we would create systems to ensure…. Every teacher is engaged in a process to clarify exactly what each student is to learn in each grade level, each course, and each unit of instruction. Every teacher is engaged in a process to clarify consistent criteria by which to assess the quality of student work. Every teacher receives frequent and timely information reg...

Dear new teacher,. August 14, 2012. ATTITUDE (or, as I learned in Philadelphia, addy-tood). Relationships with students may come easier, especially to younger teachers. Be careful. I have been asked out by students (and one student who waited until he graduated to ask me out) and this is bad. That happened before facebook and twitter came on the scene, and now you have even more venues to be careful in. Keep it professional, err on the side of caution. I have to keep working on flexibility. Sometimes...
Video Analysis | The Virtual Image
https://thevirtualimage.wordpress.com/2013/02/20/video-analysis
February 20, 2013. This year I have been doing a lot of video analysis with my conceptual classes, compared to previous years. In previous years the conceptual classes had their first experience with video analysis when we introduced projectile motion. This year they have already analyzed two accelerating systems using video analysis on Vernier’s LoggerPro. They took some data from the simulation as well, so we will have a lot of information to play with over the next two days! From → graphing.

Dinosaurs! | Ms Poodry's 180 days of teaching
https://mspoodry180.wordpress.com/2013/04/15/dinosaurs
Ms Poodry's 180 days of teaching. Modeling Instruction and Standards-Based Grading, plus some AP Physics too. On Friday the 12th I went on an NSTA-sponsored field trip to the Canyon Lake Gorge, a gorge formed in 2002 during a flood. Lots of fossils were revealed by the water and rocks that scoured a deep trench into the earth, including dinosaur footprints! Next post →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Concrete Classroom: "What are you willing to get fired for"?
http://concretekax.blogspot.com/2013/01/what-are-you-willing-to-get-fired-for.html
Monday, January 28, 2013. What are you willing to get fired for"? My favorite session at Educon was session 5. You won't find this title in program, but this is a snapshot of a great conversation that I had with Rob Grecko. He asked me: "What are you willing to get fired for? Poor test scores vs. refusing to teach scripted curriculum? We all make compromises and do things that we may philosophically disagree with at times to work in a system called a school, district, or whatever. When is enough, enough?

Ms Poodry's 180 days of teaching. Modeling Instruction and Standards-Based Grading, plus some AP Physics too. Monthly Archives: April 2013. Thursday 4/18 was “poem in your pocket” day. I could not decide, so I actually printed out THREE poems (there is another on the back of this page). These two on the front are definitely on my all-time top 10 list of poems I like. I did not read them all to all my classes, but I did read each poem multiple times throughout the day. On Friday the 12th I went on an NSTA...
Field | Ms Poodry's 180 days of teaching
https://mspoodry180.wordpress.com/2013/04/21/field
Ms Poodry's 180 days of teaching. Modeling Instruction and Standards-Based Grading, plus some AP Physics too. This was Tuesday, 4/16. The AP class was determining the relationship between the magnetic field strength and distance from a long current-carrying wire. Almost all of my photos turned out blurry. I am not sure what I had messed up in my phone’s camera settings. Next post →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:.
Back at school | Ms Poodry's 180 days of teaching

Ms Poodry's 180 days of teaching. Modeling Instruction and Standards-Based Grading, plus some AP Physics too. This is my desk today. Papers, equipment, demo materials, document camera, sweater, multimeter, markers. I hate returning from an absence and trying to catch back up. I feel like I am trying to do too much at once. https://mspoodry180.wordpress.com/2013/04/10/plans
Ms Poodry's 180 days of teaching. Modeling Instruction and Standards-Based Grading, plus some AP Physics too. And that is Thursday. Friday is a wacky day between the Red Cross Blood Drive and a guest speaker in the afternoon, for which we have a special schedule. All the classes will be short and some students will miss class. So the conceptual classes will watch a video and the AP classes have pages of Knight’s workbook to complete by Monday. Next post →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. A Year in Chemistry.
Calculators | Ms Poodry's 180 days of teaching
https://mspoodry180.wordpress.com/2013/04/21/calculators
Ms Poodry's 180 days of teaching. Modeling Instruction and Standards-Based Grading, plus some AP Physics too. I tried to forestall difficulties with calculations using scientific notation with the conceptual class by using several different calculator examples. This is one of those times when I am so happy that I have a document camera! Perhaps you recognize the number in the display of each calculator. Next post →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Ms Poodry's 180 days of teaching. Modeling Instruction and Standards-Based Grading, plus some AP Physics too. On Thursday the 11th I arrived later than planned in San Antonio due to a flight delay, but the sun was still shining and the weather was beautiful when I finally did get in. This is right outside the convention center, which is out of view on my left. Next post →. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. Fill in your details below or click an icon to log in:.
