Donald E. Westlake:. Berei...

Reviewed by Craig Sisterson. The second instalment in Woodhouse's 'Amsterdam Quartet' is a very fine European police thriller, with a twisting storyline, fascinating cast of characters, and tremendous denouement. Riordan's Desk: June 2006

Friday, June 30, 2006. Let’s pick up the writing the private eye novel thread and shift to our next major topic: plot. Good plot is all about injecting conflict into the story in an ever-intensifying fashion. In private eye novels, the obvious conflict is the one that exists between the bad guy and the private investigator. A more interesting source of conflict may be between the PI and others who don’t want him involved in the investigation. For example, in The Big Sleep. We’ve established that conflict...

Monday, April 24, 2006. On Selling Books to Bookstores. Sounds a little like selling ice to Eskimos, doesn’t it? I’m using this blog to talk about the process of writing, placing and marketing my new book. But I’m in the middle of a mini-cycle with the reprint for my first book. So I thought I’d use my efforts with. To talk about one critical step in getting a book into the hands of readers: having bookstores stock it. To help me sell the.

Etiquetas: Gangsters and Geeks. View my page on.

Monday, March 27, 2006. I made a case for participating in writers groups in my last post, and in this one I’d like to follow up with some specifics about the first group I joined. The group started, as many do, as a spin-off of a fiction writing class. All of the founding members had taken a University of California at Berkeley novel writing class from Donna Levin. Donna has published two great novels. Who wrote the Oprah book. Here’s a picture from one of our later holiday dinners. From the left ar...

Tuesday, July 25, 2006. Chandler vs. Hammett. I recently discovered the Google trends utility. And of course immediately typed in my own name to see how many hits I had. Google put me in my place with this response:. Your terms - "mark coggins" - do not have enough search volume to show graphs. After I got over that, I entered the names of two guys I was almost as interested in that I figured. To have sufficient search volume: Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. The full results can be seen here.
