breathing space: April 2014
http://katrinket.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Breathing space' property='og:site name'/. 160; breathing space. Tuesday, April 22. The last 3 days of Holy Week is traditionally family, prayer and quiet time and even if summer classes started on Holy Monday, the long exodus to the provinces left a sizzling Metro Manila tranquil and traffic-free. The break from work afforded Adri and I a few bird encounters. Even if it was high up in the tree, I was able to take a photo of this tiny migrant. It was probably on its way back north for spring. When we arr...

Breathing space' property='og:site name'/. 160; breathing space. Tuesday, January 28. Guided trips in january part 2: on campus. Barely in to the week after our candaba guided trip. Adri and I were conducting another guided triP. this time it was for members of BOx, the department of biology's home student org, who were celebrating bioweek. Of course, this was a huge advantage, since a small group is always better than a large group when birding, even on a well-populated campus! There was also a brief vi...
breathing space: December 2014
http://katrinket.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Breathing space' property='og:site name'/. 160; breathing space. Wednesday, December 31. Making up for lost birding months. Sad to say, 2014, especially the last half, was not a very productive birding (or blogging! Year for me. Caught up in work and other duties, my binoculars, camera and birding gear hardly left their respective confines in my room. The start of the year wasn't so bad: a trip to Batanes highlighted my summer, and I wrote about the birding here. Where did my birding year go? By November...
breathing space: When school is out
http://katrinket.blogspot.com/2015/08/when-school-is-out.html
Breathing space' property='og:site name'/. 160; breathing space. Sunday, August 9. When school is out. With a few bird walks scheduled as a fun activity to fill in the student-free work load for the staff, we were quick to observe a few campus birds not regularly seen during the busy school year. Dad in a typical pose. Mum in another typical pose. One of the young ones looking at me curiously. The young ones would often beg loudly for food. When this was observed by one of my high school students on ...

Breathing space' property='og:site name'/. 160; breathing space. Thursday, November 21. You sow but you do not reap. Or as they say in Filipino: ikaw ang nagtanim iba ang kumain. Looks like the cockroach the backyard brown shrike left in its larder was stolen by the red ants. Not such a great loss in my opinion. Share this on Facebook. Breathing space - http:/ katrinket.blogspot.com/2013/11/you-sow-but-you-do-not-reap.html (@NAME)' rel='nofollow' title='Tweet This! Share this on del.icio.us. Of course on...
breathing space: Alukon, white-eyes and dinengdeng
http://katrinket.blogspot.com/2015/07/alukon-white-eyes-and-dinengdeng.html
Breathing space' property='og:site name'/. 160; breathing space. Sunday, July 19. Alukon, white-eyes and dinengdeng. Ilocanos might be very familiar with the himbabao tree ( Brousonnetia luzonica. Whose flowers they use in a variety of vegetable dishes, like the yummy dinengdeng. While I love the diluted saltiness (and the obvious healthy attributes of a leafy viand) of dinengdeng, it was only recently that I became familiar with this native tree. One of a pair of lowland white-eyes on a himbabao tree.

Breathing space' property='og:site name'/. 160; breathing space. Monday, August 31. Unusual at the usual. It was great to have met new birding buddies on campus! Our walk started out with the usual suspects: a Black-naped Oriole was calling loudly from a tree in front of the admin building. Zebra Doves patrolled the grassy areas between the trees, almost oblivious to our presence. Zebra or Peaceful, both these names fit this dove perfectly! A partially hidden Coppersmith Barbet. You can just see the star...
breathing space: March 2014
http://katrinket.blogspot.com/2014_03_01_archive.html
Breathing space' property='og:site name'/. 160; breathing space. Monday, March 24. Frozen - the case of the posed kingfisher. Look, it's a dead kingfisher! Manny pointed out a Collared Kingfisher at the base of the swimming pool. We were walking on a short boardwalk through some mangroves and towards the end an edge-less swimming pool peeked through the mangroves on our left. Why was the lifeless body of a collared kingfisher in a bizarre pose? Are you sure it's dead? Why is it standing like that? And so...

http://katrinket.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Breathing space' property='og:site name'/. 160; breathing space. Friday, April 24. Having spent the weekend away from home in Ilocos to check on migrating raptors. I was anxious to check on the progress of the Philippine Pied Fantail and Yellow-vented Bulbul fledgelings in the backyard. Parent and child: an artistic filter care of a dusty screened window. I had a chance to get home from work with the sun still up on Thursday, so I had more time to check on the birds. Were 2 hungry mouths wide open. A bit...

Through A Blog Darkly. Saturday, June 20, 2015. The continued decline of manhood? Western countries are transitioning away from traditional blue collar industries towards technological based service companies. Modern economies need brains over brawn and women are flourishing in this new environment while men are failing to adapt to both feminism and tech. This is the warning from The Economist article entitled 'Men Adrift'. Similar warnings are echoed in 'The End of Men' by the Atlantic. The chattering c...
