Monday, June 16, 2008. What punctuation mark are you? Thanks to Amy Storms. For pointing this one out. What punctuation mark am I? Apparently, I'm a colon. Shame, I was hoping I'd be a semicolon, I like those. Anyone who knows me, does this sound like me at all? I like the "brilliant" bit :). You Are a Colon. You are very orderly and fact driven. You aren't concerned much with theories or dreams. only what's true or untrue. You are brilliant and incredibly learned. Anything you know is well researched.

tomdg: January 2006

http://tomdg.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 26, 2006. In Praise of Democracy (kind of). I don't believe that democracy is some kind of ideal to which we should all ascribe, but I can probably agree with Winston Churchill that it is "the worst form of government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time". I personally reckon the test of a government is what it does, not what political system created it. I wonder how this will affect the US's attempts to bring democracy to the middle east? The US governmen...

tomdg: This month ...

http://tomdg.blogspot.com/2006/06/this-month.html

Friday, June 23, 2006. This month, I will be mostly thinking about the World Cup. Apologies to readers who have not watched the Fast Show, who won't recognize that misquote). I like football, so I'm not one of these people trying to block it out. And being a bit of a mongrel, I have plenty of choices for who to support, which keeps it interesting for longer. England, of course; Argentina, where I was born (and aren't they doing well! So over the next couple of weeks I will have to endure the same torture...

tomdg: What makes you happy?

http://tomdg.blogspot.com/2006/05/what-makes-you-happy.html

Wednesday, May 10, 2006. What makes you happy? There's a piece on the BBC website. About happiness, asking the question: what makes you happy? Well, here are some of mine. Sitting on top of Glyder Fach (a Welsh mountain) facing into the wind. Getting a broken model railway engine working again. Making part of an engine out of plastic, showing it to my son (nearly 4), and he says, "that's brilliant! Fixing a particularly knotty bug at work. Chelsea winning the league by beating Manchester United 3-0.

tomdg: September 2005

http://tomdg.blogspot.com/2005_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 30, 2005. But what’s really amazing is just how little difference 1 a litre has made. You still see 4x4s on the road making short trips into town to go shopping or take the kids to school. You still see 90% of cars on the way to work with just one person in them (including mine.). If high prices are the economy’s way of sending us a message, it’s clear that we just don’t get it! Posted by tomdg at 9:21 am. Thursday, September 29, 2005. Posted by tomdg at 8:11 am. tomdg: June 2004

http://tomdg.blogspot.com/2004_06_01_archive.html

Monday, June 14, 2004. On the BBC web site:. Weblogs are sometimes criticised for being the self-obsessed ramblings of people who have little to say and too much time on their hands in which to do it.". Well, I can't comment about anyone else, but in my case that's certainly true. Hey, why not? What's wrong with that? Personally I find self-obsessed ramblings interesting, at least sometimes. I wonder if anyone might find my self-obsessed ramblings interesting . Posted by tomdg at 3:09 pm. Once I'd manage...

What I do in my spare time. Thursday, January 18, 2007. My dad is a writer, translator and editor: a professional. I write computer code for a living. Spot the difference. He's written two novels (and a bunch of other stuff). I can claim that I've written three novels, but there's no comparison. That's why I was rather nervous about telling him about NaNoWriMo. But in the end I let him see the first couple of chapters, and then sent him the whole thing. So now he's set me a challenge. He's off to Ita...

Random opinions, ideas, and comments. Wednesday, June 07, 2006. Why pay the water bill? I was astonished to read on the BBC yesterday. That 15% of the country refuse to pay their water bills, and that water companies are not allowed to cut off supply if they don't. Fifteen percent! That's mind-boggling. Do the water companies send in bailiffs to try to recover this, or can they not be bothered? Can't believe Bishop Hill. Posted by tomdg at 4:08 AM. Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, United Kingdom. Random opinions, ideas, and comments. Tuesday, May 02, 2006. I was going to reply to Cheryl's post on immigration. But since my reply ended up being longer than her post, I thought it should probably go here instead. Immigration has been on the news a lot recently. Here in the UK it's been the wave of immigration from Eastern Europe which has made the headlines most recently. So both the UK and US have immigrants as a key part of their economy, the difference being their legal status. Fundamentally I...

Note: this post or fragment of a post is not very topical - I wrote it a while ago in response to a news item about Saddam Hussein being tried for genocide against the Kurdish people and / or the "Marsh Arabs". What I do in my spare time. Friday, May 30, 2008. I got this out of the library because I’d really enjoyed her latest book, Pillow Talk. This was her first. Always interesting to see where a writer’s come from. The main characters aren’t terribly sympathetic, at least not to start with: the man is a total poser, and the woman seems to want to reinvent herself as a complete bitch. I have no idea why. He is an architect (like the main character in Home is that cliché? I guess at a high level, the story wor...

What I do in my spare time. Tuesday, June 26, 2012. Soul Music Terry Pratchett. Having just compared the previous book I read to this one, I thought I’d read this one again. Last time I read it was 15 years ago when I was in a band, so I thought it would be interesting to see if it was as good as I remembered. It was probably better. I’d kind of hope not, otherwise I shouldn’t be reading or watching films, let alone writing my own novels! Or was it Spinal Tap? Posted by tomdg at 1:26 PM. It looked promis...
