Click on the thumbnails for larger images. The Ouachita kidneyshell is a characteristic upland stream species in rivers on the south and west sides of the Ozark Plateaus. This specimen is from the Spring River in Cherokee County, Kansas. Close-up of gravid gill. The marsupial gills are folded, increasing the length of the gill and number of ovisacs that are produced (Lefevre and Curtis 1912). The ovisacs are released in early spring. Appear to mimic larval fish- (well. maybe! That comes with Windows.

The female broken-rays mussel displays a mantle flap lure that convincingly mimics a small fish. The host fishes include smallmouth bass and rock bass. These predators attack the lure, rupturing the marsupia that lie between the mantle flap and releasing the glochidia. Want to see a movie but have a slow connection? Black sandshell ( Ligumia recta. Click on the thumbnails for larger images. Black sandshell is a spectacular mussel that is widely distributed in the medium to large rivers of the. Eastern U.S. and Canada. The mantle lure is very large and active, and the marsupial gill is stark white (see below). The fish hosts include walleye and sauger. These predators attack the lure, rupturing the marsupia that lie between the mantle flaps and releasing the glochidia. Please see Usage Policy.

The Bad and the Ugly - predators, disease, and competitors. A severely eroded but still living specimen of Quadrula. From the Black River in eastern Missouri. Causes of this condition are not understood. Both chemical and biological factors may be involved. Unidentified ciliate protists attacking a juvenile Lampsilis. This rhabdocoel turbellarian flatworm ( Microstomum sp. Has ingested a juvenile Lampsilis,. Zebra mussels encrusting the posterior end of a fatmucket ( Lampsilis siliquoidea).

Sunday, May 17, 2015. We visited an Ozark fen that had been used in the 1970s as a recreational mud pit for trucks. The deep muck almost swallowed my colleague as he sank to his knees in beautiful black fen soil. He came out with a monster-sized devil crawfish whose turrets and tunnels coursed through the fen. Down in that deep McDonald County country one encounters a limestone layer that supports a suite of rare-in-Missouri plants like Draba aprica and other spring forbs including green trillium, which expressed itself as though it was on steroids, a massive plant blooming all along the bottomlands. Talked about the tasks and dangers involved on the Lewis and Clark expedition and later addressed question from the audience in Drouillard's accented voice so convincingly that everyone thought it was the Drouillard himself.
