http://thephiltrons.com/category/country-reflections
The Philtrons Pedal North. Where are we now? Category Archives: Country reflections. Reflections on our first country: Canada. We have been on the road now for more than two months, so a moment for summary and reflection is certainly warranted. Of course, it is particularly apt since we just left Canada for the final time on this trip, bringing to a close our time visiting with our northern neighbors. Below I summarize some of our challenges, joys, and highlights. Distance between grocery stores. Actuall...
Welcome to Ecuador! | The Philtrons Pedal North
http://thephiltrons.com/2015/08/02/welcome-to-ecuador
The Philtrons Pedal North. Where are we now? One week ago we entered our eighth country: Ecuador. It then proceeded to pour rain for the next week. Charmed as we were by the lush jungle, new architecture, and very nicely painted churches, it has been a tough week. We are now resting in the colonial city of Cuenca in the Ecuadorian Andes, where it has finally (! Stopped raining for a bit. Waiting at immigration…. Wait for me there! First view of Ecuador, across the river. The church in a teeny town. At le...

The Philtrons Pedal North. Where are we now? Canyons, mountains, heat, and altitude. Upscale eatery in Huaraz. It was so fun to meet friends for lunch! One last glimpse of the snow as we leave Huaraz. Our route from Huaraz took us from 10,000′ all the way down to 1,000′ over 3 days. You are probably wondering why it would take us 3 days, it was all downhill after all! The Canyon del Pato begins. It is dark in here! Finally opning up again, on a nasty bumpy dirt road. We started way down there at the river.

The Philtrons Pedal North. Where are we now? Down to the jungle: our last post from Peru. Our last section of Peru. I can’t hardly believe it: tomorrow we leave Peru and enter Ecuador. Two little kids on one little bike. Next up was the craziest descent and ascent that we’ve ever done. We crested a smal...At the ...

http://thephiltrons.com/2015/06/25/huancavelica-to-huaraz-still-more-mountains
The Philtrons Pedal North. Where are we now? Huancavelica to Huaraz – still more mountains. There are glaciers here, and huge, beautiful peaks all around us. It is definitely not what one expects to see when they think of the tropics. Now, a few tidbits about what it took to get here. Jason is happy to be back on the bike. On the first climb leaving Huancavelica. Some ladies take Jason to their tiny store for soda. Mountaintop farms and cemetery. This doggy was my favorite. Note amused dude in background.

The Philtrons Pedal North. Where are we now? Leaving the altiplano and entering Peru. This past week we’ve been moving quickly towards Cusco. We had an exiting exit from La Paz, a beautiful ride along Lake Titicaca, and have entered our 7th country: Peru! Country number 7: Peru! After taking a day to let our legs recover from our hike, we got up very early to leave La Paz before traffic picked up. Unfortunately, Daisy got a flat tire 3 blocks down the street! I feel permanently altered by what we’ve seen; have been rendered gloriously insignificant by vast mountain ranges, washed clean by rivers, and have been recalibrated by the distance we travelled. But what has really changed us, is kindness. And my god, there is just so much of it. He aha te mea nui o te Ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata! What is the most important thing in the world?
