A Bear Grylls moment. I had been camping in Bladensberg National Park with the band. It rained overnight and we were worried about getting stuck if it rained anymore. As we were preparing to leave another flash storm soaked the flats. The road out was spotted with large pools. We made it through them and came to a causeway that crossed a flooded creek. Barry's drug of choice. Ben dropped me off at a Roadhouse on the Barkley highway. I stayed overnight and in the morning hitched a ride with Barry, a truck driver on his way to Catherine. He was an addict. But, unlike some of his friends, the drug he used to stay awake on long journeys was not amphetamines. It was audio books. Stuck in Saint George. As arranged, I arrived at the pub to meet Barnaby Joyce at 7:30pm. The place was heaving with foreign fruit pickers, local farmers, travelers, musicians, blackfellas, whitefellas, old and young. I got talking to a singer named Wendy whose band, Backtrack, has a local cult following.
