Coveted Books: March 2006
http://covetedbooks.blogspot.com/2006_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 28, 2006. Alex Rider Collection- Anthony Horowitz. They're obviously marketed to pre-teen boys, but they were better than I expected. Really the fact that they're written for a younger audience doesn't make that much difference from how regular thrillers are written. There's also an element of self-awareness that's kind of fun, mocking some of the staples of the genre while still following all the rules. Grade B. Posted by Alex at 6:28 PM. Links to this post. Coveted Books: April 2006

Saturday, April 29, 2006. The Great Influenza- John Barry. This is a scary book. It's a scientific/historical non-fiction book about the world-wide pandemic of influenza in 1918, so I wasn't expecting puppies and kittens and crap, but oh my God. It was a particularly nasty strain of influenza and since I don't know if anyone's eating while reading this so I'll spoiler some of the symptoms/effects-. People coughing so hard their. Bleeding from the eyeballs. In white blood cells. Posted by Alex at 4:39 PM.

Monday, June 19, 2006. The Good, the Bad, and the Undead- Kim Harrison. I'm sure I'll read the other ones in the series, just not right away. Posted by Alex at 11:39 AM. Links to this post. Sunday, June 11, 2006. The City of Falling Angels- John Berendt. I know my descriptions always make thing sound really dry and boring, but I promise it's not. The author has a way with adjectives and a knack for hunting down the eccentrics in any given room that combine to paint an odd picture of a certain moneyed...

Coveted Books: October 2005

Saturday, October 29, 2005. First a disclaimer- I know that my sentence structure skills aren't 100 percent, but I don't do this professionally either. So I'm reading my new "Entertainment Weekly", which has an article on Anne Rice's new biography of Jesus, and I am momentarily confused by this-. Her father was a postal worker; her mother, an alcoholic, died when Rice was 14.". Now, I'm pretty sure her mother wasn't a professional alcoholic, but I sure thought so for a second. Monday, January 30, 2006. Another NPR commentator, this is his book of essays from a couple years ago. Nicely done, they're all funny, but in a kind of bittersweet way. I still think David Sedaris is really the best at pulling that off, but Rakoff holds his own. My only complaint is that you're not really allowed to play the "helpless city slicker" card if you're the type of person who can sign up for a wilderness survival course and not only. But not be particularly miserable either. Links to this post.

Tuesday, May 30, 2006. Cross Your Heart and Hope to Die- Nancy Martin. I forgot to post this one. The fourth book in the Blackbird sisters series,. And I liked it, but not as much as the first 3. There was a whole S and M/SemiRapist subplot that kinda squicked me out. Still one of my fav series though. I want Nora's wardrobe so bad I can't even tell you. Posted by Alex at 10:23 AM.
