Virginia Wilderness - Keeping it like it is. Click for a PDF file. The Raccoon Branch Proposed Wilderness is located in Smyth County in the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. It contains 4,223 acres of extremely rugged country rising to a height of 4,000 feet on the High Point of Dickey Ridge. The ridges are capped with resistant lower Cambrian quartzite, which is responsible for the great variations in altitude within the area.

The area looks out across Craig Creek to the slopes of Sinking Creek Mountain in the Jefferson National Forest, offering hunter and hiker a feeling of true wilderness solitude.

The forest was logged and burned during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, but much of the canopy vegetation is more than 100 years old. It consists of hardwoods such as tulip tree, cucumber tree, basswood, red and sugar maple, and red and white oak.
