Gytheio used to be the main port of Sparta (40km away) until it was destroyed by an earthquake on the 4th century AD. Nowadays, it is a charming, lively town where one can take a walk on the lengthy sea-side promenade with the fishing boats, seafood restaurants (tavernas) and lovely cafes.

The richness and quality of the unearthed findings witness the existence of a populous society in Alepotripa, which developed over time into an important centre that engaged largely in trade, maritime travel, farming and stockbreeding. Strangely enough, human skeletons were found on the surface, meaning that entombment had not taken place. The town is full of mansion houses built right on the foothills of the mountain. There are some beaches around Gytheio, with the largest one being Mavrovouni.

Porto Kagio is a beautiful, natural port, located 3 miles north of Tainaro Cape. There are the remnants of two historical forts. It is mainly a natural attraction, especially during the summer months, when it turns into a popular destination and it attracts many sailing boats travelling from the Aegena to the Ionian Sea and vice versa. Porto Kagio is a peaceful village, the main economy of which is tourism, with tavernas, beach bars, water sports and a few hotels.

Mani is famous for its high quality olive oil. There are thousands of olive trees and many olive oil producers. It is highly recommended to buy some when visiting the area! Meat, especially pork and wild boar, is found often in the local cuisine, cooked in many ways. Oranges are also found as a strong presence in the area and they are used to flavour sausages, sygklino, olives and even used in salads. Typical local products in Mani include:- Olive oil.
