ArtSticks- The Arts in Rural Texas. Monday, March 27, 2006. More on Poetry, Audience, and Young People. A couple of weeks ago, I posted about the experience of being a "visiting poet" to a class of freshman composition students (see Ashbery, with Freshmen.). Today, I've come across another blogger's take on the whole issue of teaching poetry to younger people. Cahiers de Corey- March 23, 2006 Entry. High-tuition prep schools with their highly-competitive teaching positions are less prone to this problem,...

ArtSticks- The Arts in Rural Texas: February 2006

ArtSticks- The Arts in Rural Texas. Friday, February 24, 2006. I really did enjoy my night out last night, but I am so ready for a short hibernation. I have a studio (and living room and kitchen) full of paintings that need attention; there are at least five that are promising enough to move forward. I wonder if I'll ever be able to become more efficient? By that I mean: I wonder if the time will ever come when every painting I start will end up worthy of being "finished"? Links to this post. Painting and Not Painting. Then there are times (like this weekend) when I have the will to continue but not the resources; those are the worst, so far, because I know full well what I. Be doing if only I were able. It's a nasty, impotent feeling that leaves me depressed and irritable. Learn to take the cycles as they come!

ArtSticks- The Arts in Rural Texas: July 2006

ArtSticks- The Arts in Rural Texas. Wednesday, July 19, 2006. Art and Fear Indeed. Sometimes it's tough being out here in the middle of nowhere, especially when you're an artist. Right now I'm going through a stage that I don't understand, and there isn't really a community to whom I can talk/gripe/complain/beg for help! So I'll do what all good people do in 2006: blog about it. What the hell is going on? What about discipline and all that? Found a quote today that I found frighteningly appropriate:.

ArtSticks- The Arts in Rural Texas. Tuesday, August 22, 2006. Andrew Currey, Waco Cultural Arts Fest, and More. It's been awhile, hasn't it? I have excuses, good ones. This Sunday, August 20th, was the opening reception for Andrew Currey's farewell show at Beatnix Coffeehouse. Something when I stand in front of it, and that's always my first and foremost criteria. A Pisces thing, I guess. In any case, we'll have pictures soon. Using the links here. Lobby for the month of October, for the opening of "Deat...

ArtSticks- The Arts in Rural Texas: December 2005

ArtSticks- The Arts in Rural Texas. Saturday, December 31, 2005. Everyone keeps telling me that a large part of an artist's success lies in self-promotion. From what I've seen, this is true. All too true, unfortunately for me; I'm innately averse to self-promotion of any kind! Meanwhile, I'll be painting what I feel is my best work, and looking for some clown shoes. Small, self-effacing ones, preferably. Posted by Laura F. Walton @ 1:46 PM. Links to this post. Saturday, December 24, 2005. To paint. I...

ArtSticks- The Arts in Rural Texas. Monday, June 26, 2006. Okay, here it is, a poem inspired by the word verification system on Blogspot! I had to type in the word "caujufn" to leave a comment earlier, and decided to be inspired by it. The result is for Maryee, Jen, and Penny.hey, what are friends for? We Told You So. Just one look from him caused your fins to melt. Didn’t it, you silly fish, you? Blowing bubbles in your own fascinating ocean-. It wasn’t enough. We told you so. You can’t say. It's a proj...

ArtSticks- The Arts in Rural Texas. Tuesday, September 19, 2006. Reagan's Children House Show. This weekend, I participated in what had to be one of the most interesting shows I've seen yet in Waco. Reagan's Children Transient Gallery. Held a house show on Saturday, and it was fantastic! There was a ton of great art by young local artists working in all mediums and styles, not to mention music, food and drink. Kudos to Raquel Coronado and everyone else who helped put this show together. Links to this post.
