Hardley Flood (River Chet). Wherries have been part of life in the Broads for hundreds of years. Before roads and railways, waterways were the main transport routes for trade and people. River trade – the ability to bring in raw materials and export finished goods – helped make Norwich England’s second city. The River Yare was an important trading route, linking Norwich with the port of Great Yarmouth and the wider world beyond. Most towns and villages had dykes connecting them to the river, and a &#...

The long-term aim of the Broads Authority and Norfolk County Council is to improve access where possible and appropriate, along our entire footpath network. Much of the Wherryman’s Way runs along riverside footpaths which can get wet and muddy during winter high tides, but on paths that are less remote and difficult we are working with landowners to replace stiles and improve surfacing so that more people can get out and enjoy the wonderful Broads countryside. Visitors using larger motorised wheelchairs ...

The Wherryman's Web: A sell-out at the Farmers' Market

http://wherrymansweb.blogspot.com/2012/12/its-sell-out.html

Thursday, 20 December 2012. A sell-out at the Farmers' Market. THINK "Farmers' Markets" and you probably think of smallholders selling their cabbages next to farmers flogging a bit of beef. Those guys are there of course. But next door you'll find all manner of hobbyists too. People who just love baking bread. The hospital consultant brewing beer in his garage. And yes, me with my books, getting as evangelical about canoeing the Broads as every other stallholder is about their thing. The Wherryman's Way ...

The Wherryman's Web: Reedham: chimneys sweep up the Yare

http://wherrymansweb.blogspot.com/2013/12/cantley-chimneys-sweep-up-yare.html

Tuesday, 17 December 2013. Reedham: chimneys sweep up the Yare. THEY reckon it’s 25 years since cargo this big last made its way up the Yare. And as these superb photos from Mike Page show it was far from plain sailing. We’re looking at huge sugar evaporation towers gingerly making their way up from Great Yarmouth to Cantley. Old timers will tell you that massive loads like this used to be commonplace. These days they’re a news story. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. IT&#8217...

Friday, 1 March 2013. Loddon: Aston before villas. IT’S only the Nissen huts on the right of the picture that help me place this scene. Everything else about Loddon Staithe is totally unrecognisable 50 years on. Both boats and buildings belonged to the company which was known as Princess Cruisers and Aston Boats. 31 May 2013 at 07:50. This comment has been removed by the author. Monday, 25 March 2013. Picture Post: The Guardian does the WW. THE ARTICLE is great too, but I fell in love with this image the minute I opened Saturday’s Guardian. Rachel Tudor Best is the artist. I think she’s summed up the Wherryman’s Way in a very beautiful and succinct way. See Patrick Barkham’s accompanying words here. The Wherryman's Web: Surlingham: A facelift for St Mary’s

http://wherrymansweb.blogspot.com/2013/05/surlingham-facelift-for-st-marys.html

Saturday, 11 May 2013. Surlingham: A facelift for St Mary’s. PREPARE for a warmer welcome at St Mary’s Surlingham in the months to come. To be honest, I’ve never had any other kind of welcome at this well-loved church directly on the Wherryman’s Way. But the parish has long felt that it hasn’t got good enough facilities to do the job properly. 8220;Until now the church has been used in a limited way for community events,” said organiser Louise Swift. http://wherrymansweb.blogspot.com/2013/05/has-hardley-mill-ever-looked-this-good.html

Monday, 13 May 2013. Hardley Mill: Rockley’s reflections. HAS Hardley Mill ever looked this good? This beautiful photo from Hardley Windmill Trust chairman Richard Rockley shows the big changes on the landward side of the mill. New drainage works here have changed the landscape quite dramatically. In Richard’s words: “at last it is possible to get the iconic ‘Broads mill reflected in water’ shot.”. He knows this stretch of the WW like the back of his hand and has a fantastic memory for the late 1940s:.

The Wherryman's Web: Rockland St Mary: The New Inn closes

http://wherrymansweb.blogspot.com/2013/01/rockland-st-mary-new-inn-closes.html

Friday, 4 January 2013. Rockland St Mary: The New Inn closes. SAD news for the New Year at Rockland where the New Inn has once more closed its doors. Mick and Paula Walker (pictured) took over in late 2011 and gave it a good go – no-one had a bad word to say about them. But by the looks of it the numbers didn’t add up, so once again Rockland finds itself without a pub in the bleak mid-winter. It’s happened a number of times before. What’s the solution this time? http://wherrymansweb.blogspot.com/2013/02/loddon-all-aboard-in-1917.html

Wednesday, 27 February 2013. Loddon: all aboard in 1917. DON’T you love the health and safety on board this wherry in 1917? And half of them are presumably medical staff. I know that there was some sort of war hospital within the Lecture Hall on George Lane in Loddon during World War One: so I’m guessing these are both staff and the fitter patients making the most of a sunny day. The Wherryman's Web: Roll up for the Rockland rollercoaster

http://wherrymansweb.blogspot.com/2013/05/roll-up-for-rockland-rollercoaster.html

Wednesday, 1 May 2013. Roll up for the Rockland rollercoaster. IF you’ve visited the Woods End pub at Bramerton recently you’ll know that it’s had a very smart facelift. Now it turns out that the man behind all that painting and decorating is about to re-open The New Inn at Rockland with his wife. And yes this one’s had a few quid spent on it too. Andy and Gail Cadey have lived in Rockland for a few months. Seeing what was happening at the new look “Water’s Edge, Woods End”. For the moment the Cadeys are...

The Wherryman's Web

Thursday, 23 July 2015. Wearily waiting for a weir. SO when is one of Norfolk’s major footpaths not a major footpath? When it’s the Wherryman’s Way and there are pricy repairs waiting to be done, it seems. I haven’t been down there myself recently, but word reaches me that a bridge over a weir next to Hardley Flood still hasn’t been replaced months after problems first arose. Call me a pessimist, but that feels like early 2016 .at least. Sunday, 23 March 2014. The Wherryman’s Way: sold out. If you would ...
