Chris Rose's Monty Botany. Sounds like theres another brood of young Blackbirds. Out and about in a neighbours garden - this may be the third of the year! A Small Dusty Wave. Moth was in the flat this morning. I didnt take a photo as it was too boring. This evening, a Jay. Flew across Station Road and sat on a fence near Colstons School for several seconds - it would have made a fantastic photo but I didnt have my camera! In Montpelier Park there was a singing Chaffinch. And a Carrion Crow. Moth Ive seen...

Chris Rose's Monty Botany. Was new at the station - almost certainly a migrant. Greenfinch. Still nothing to write home about as far as birds are concerned in the last couple of days. This morning at the station there were 4 Blackbirds. And good numbers of both House Sparrows. Or two. Great. Were calling from near the feeders. When I got home from work I found a hoverfly. Plants included Common Toadflax. At Fairlawn Road a Chiffchaff. Was calling and a couple of Green Shieldbugs. And Dock Leaf Bugs.

Chris Rose's Monty Botany. Montpelier Park produced a single Willow Warbler. With at least 2 singing Blackcaps. Nearby. A singing Greenfinch. Was also in the park. The Starlings. At the station have almost all gone - just a couple around the feeders seen this morning. There were more Greenfinches. Singing this evening at St Pauls Park. The only birds of note this morning were 3 Jays. Sat in a tree in Montpelier Park. Not much else in the drizzly conditions. The first 2 Willow Warblers. Was breaking off t...

Chris Rose's Monty Botany. Despite an extended ramble around the patch taking in the delights of Lower Montpelier, there was surprisingly little to report apart from a Goldfinch. At Old Ashley Hill, cracking views of a Goldcrest. Along the railway path and a party of Great. Still plenty of insects around in the susnshine today, including a fine Dark Bush Cricket. And a Green Shield Bug. At Fairlawn and a Drone Fly. At St Andrews Road along with plenty of Wasps. Birds today included a Chiffchaff. I can th...

Chris Rose's Monty Botany. One of the weirdest experiences Ive had happened this afternoon on the station. It was 2.20 and the birds were going berserk with alarm calls - Long-tailed Tits. Involved plus some worried-looking Great Tits. I looked to see if a raptor was flying overhead but nothing. Suddenly, from below the feeders, a Montpelier Mustelid. Emerged and went straight down its hole! Bizarre. Im also a little concerned that it was out and about during the day and wonder if it was unhealthy. There...

Wildlife observations and conservation issues - primarily from the City of Bristol (from a green political perspective). Monday, 21 April 2008. 30/3/08 - RAILWAYS, RECORDERS, RUE-LEAVED SAXIFRAGE. Once back in Bristol I walked across the centre of town to attend the excellent BRERC Recorder’s get-together at the Wills Memorial Building, then onward to Westbury Park. Wishing to check something around St. Michael-on-the-Mount, I headed home up St. Michaels Hill. There was a swathe of the very s...26/4/08: ...

http://wild-in-the-city.blogspot.com/2008/04/24408-playing-turf-accountant-mining.html
Wildlife observations and conservation issues - primarily from the City of Bristol (from a green political perspective). Thursday, 24 April 2008. 24/4/08: PLAYING THE TURF ACCOUNTANT / MINING BEES. OK, so there are times when keeping turf short is a good idea. Another fairly modern development with a good native flora in un-fenced front garden lawns that I like to keep an account of, is that bounded by White Tree Road, Fallodon Way and Northumbria Drive in Henleaze. Mining Bees, first spotted last year, ...

Wildlife observations and conservation issues - primarily from the City of Bristol (from a green political perspective). Thursday, 24 April 2008. 24/4/08: A GENETICS ‘ICON’ INCHES FROM YOUR FEET. KNOW YOUR THALE CRESS. Having returned to wildlife recording after a long break, it’s good to familiarise oneself with new species, even if they are ‘as common as muck’. One such in recent weeks has been Thale Cress (. Another addition to my all-time list is. Barren Strawberry is one of my fave plants and a real...

http://wild-in-the-city.blogspot.com/2008/04/7408-country-lane-near-kellaway-avenue.html
Wildlife observations and conservation issues - primarily from the City of Bristol (from a green political perspective). Tuesday, 22 April 2008. 7/4/08 – A COUNTRY LANE NEAR KELLAWAY AVENUE, AND THREE FOXES. The large patch of Field Madder in the lawn at 53 Kellaway Avenue is still flowering strongly. A plant of an ‘escaped’ Spotted Deadnettle (Lamium maculatum) was noted under the large willow on the left. It was accompanied by the related White Deadnettles and Hedge Woundwort. A horrible orange glare f...

Wildlife observations and conservation issues - primarily from the City of Bristol (from a green political perspective). Tuesday, 22 April 2008. 22/4/08: MEXICAN FLEABANE MAKING A MOVE. One of the advantages of having horticulture as a hobby is that escaped ‘aliens’ can often be recognised (along with an ability to tell the difference between ‘weed’ seedlings and those of desirable ornamentals). I think it will become very frequent quite quickly. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). 7/4/08 – A COUNT...

Just books, no bull. (Well, maybe a little.). Willa Cather Novel Challenge. Monday, August 10, 2015. Greetings from the Outer Banks!
