Wild For The Owyhee. Multnomah County, Oregon. Being in the outdoors is where we find our healing. That is what I learned after serving in the U.S. Navy and dealing with the daily struggle of living with post-traumatic stress disorder. I still recall the solace I found when I hooked a fish for the first time. The river basically saved my life it was a sign to me to connect with the outdoors and to work to ensure that all people had access to our special wild rivers and lands. I grew up in Mexico amidst t...

Wild For The Owyhee. Multnomah County, Oregon. I moved to Oregon two decades ago, drawn in part by its astounding natural areas. I had the opportunity to live all over the state Klamath Falls, Union, Blue River before settling down in Portland. And very early on, I hiked, camped and explored in the Owyhee Canyonlands. The Owyhee Canyonlands is a delicate desert environment. Let’s have the foresight to protect it today. I have no doubt that future generations will thank us. Wild For The Owyhee.

Wild For The Owyhee. Union County, Oregon. I was born in Ontario, Oregon shortly after the War. My grandpa started the Ontario Laundry in 1910, which my dad took over in 1955 and sold in 1980. We all loved the outdoors camping, hunting, fishing, hiking. Between family, friends, and Boy Scouts, we spent the most outdoor time in the Owyhee country. The gems of the Wallowas, Hells Canyon, Wenaha, Strawberrys, North Fork John Day and Steens Mountain have been protected. The Owyhees deserve no less.

March 1, 2015. On New Year’s Day. And thusly my year-round project of digging up sod came to an untimely end last winter. I will be trying my best to balance between yard and trail this year, but my obsessive nature (feed the bees and butterflies) will probably swing more towards the yard again in 2015, at least until the grass is gone and more native and pollinator friendly flowers and shrubs have gone into the yard. After a few days in the teens or below, a day in the upper 20s seems downright balmy...
