Choose a scale for your den (e.g. to fit you or your toy). Build a den using available resources. How to take it even further or make it more challenging. Older children can be taught knotting/lashing to create tripods or screens for larger structures. Devise a game which involves using the den(s). Act out a story based on the woodland den. What does a tree's 'face' say about its character? Hunt for 'faces' amongst the natural features of trees (e.g. knots, bumps, holes, bark patterns, moss, twigs etc.). Take a photo which can be printed and stuck in writing book. Use the nature of the 'face' and its expression to write a description of the tree's personality. What happens in Fairytale Land? Make fairytale puppet characters. Create a fairytale land in the outdoor space e.g. small doors on trees; ladders; fairy ring with stones. In groups, create stories using puppets in 'Fairytale Land'. Re-tell the story to peers or younger children and/or take a video and play back to parents.
