Tinkering with USB hardware, Ubuntu, Django/Python, and other fun stuff. Friday, July 24, 2015. Way back when, one of my friends in high school was a guy named Dave Wilson. Here is a prototype, mostly testing the touch-sensitive keyboard. For this version the sound was generated by Timidity running on a Raspberry Pi, and the form factor is obviously different. The keyboard misbehaved in this video because of a sagging under-powered 12-volt supply. I had some confusion about the date for the Rhode Island ...

Will Ware's blog: August 2014

http://willware.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Tinkering with various electronics and software things, and a bit of math and science in general. Friday, August 29, 2014. Of bicycle chain and sprockets. Here is the best video I've found for working on bicycle chain. I haven't looked extensively but this one gave me the information I needed, starting at the 34-second mark. A mechanical engineering term for chains that follow the same principle. If you're going to build a gadget using bicycle chain as a drive chain, remember that you'll need a tensioner...

Tinkering with various electronics and software things, and a bit of math and science in general. Wednesday, July 09, 2014. Cleaning up the SLA printer design. The stereolithographic printer described in my last post works, but it has a lot of room for improvement. Two obvious improvements are to use a stepper motor to raise and lower the build platform, allowing for automated operation, and to accept standard input files such as the STL file format. A stepper control board. And a Raspberry Pi. And in fa...

Tinkering with various electronics and software things, and a bit of math and science in general. Tuesday, September 16, 2014. A couple of recent 3D printing successes. If you'd like to see these prints and others, and the printer that made them, come to Maker Faire NYC. This weekend at the New York Hall of Science. In Queens, NY. Here is a chess rook. This is a dodecahedron. One of the five Platonic solids. In the days of ancient Greece, this shape was the cause of some controversy. As was the rook.

Tinkering with various electronics and software things, and a bit of math and science in general. Tuesday, April 15, 2014. Espruino: JavaScript for embedded devices. Was really written primarily as background for this post. TL;DR: there is a lot we're doing right nowadays as software engineers, that we were screwing up badly 20 to 30 years ago. I am moved to write this post because I've been playing with the Espruino. Board (having pre-ordered one during the Kickstarter campaign. This video is Gordon Wil...

Will Ware's blog: May 2013

http://willware.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Tinkering with various electronics and software things, and a bit of math and science in general. Thursday, May 30, 2013. Still plugging away on the FPGA synthesizer. Anyway I've moved this stuff into its own Github repository. Saturday, May 18, 2013. My FPGA design skills are a little rustier than I thought. And had many interesting discussions with him about circuit design for synthesizers, a passion he shared with his father. While he taught me what he knew about synthesizers, I taught him what I ...

The Anti-Suit Movement (Aaron Swartz's Raw Thought)

http://www.aaronsw.com/weblog/antisuit

I don’t like wearing suits. In part, this is simply a question of personal taste — I find them uncomfortable and overpriced, and I don’t like the way they look. But it’s also a question of principle. Suits — and the other trappings of “respect” that go with them, like titles and sir’s and the rest — are the physical evidence of power distance. The entrenchment of a particular form of inequality. You should follow me on twitter here. March 16, 2010. Well the answer from the 60s is surely that if your smal...

Will's Fabber Blog: June 2008

http://wills-fabber-blog.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 6, 2008. RepRap replicates, and Will gets a New Toy. On the left is Adrian Bowyer, the University of Bath professor who started the RepRap project. My own news is, at least locally, equally exciting. My CNC mill. And I also got an Arduino. Controller. I've got my stepper motors from RRRF. And a Harbor Freight router. Is on the way. It's going to take time to put everything together, and of course there's very little spare time in the life of a modern adult. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). By Adr...

The Reason So Many People Are Unemployed (Aaron Swartz's Raw Thought)

http://www.aaronsw.com/weblog/whynojobs

The Reason So Many People Are Unemployed. Around the time of the Great Depression, a man named John Maynard Keynes made an incredible discovery. The reason so many people were out of work was not really because of irresponsible banks or high taxes or reckless government policy. It was really much simpler than all that: there wasn’t enough money. They begun recovering from the Great Depression. You might think this sounds crazy — a bunch of unelected bankers get to decide how many people have jobs? Now so...

Gather Round And Let Me Teach You The Most Valuable Skill I Know In 5 Days. An Arduino Primer (And How To Tweet The Temperature Using The Wifi Shield). When I was little, my dad would take me to Radio Shack. We’d get some wires, batteries, lights, annoying little piezo buzzers and wire everything together at home. He would mount everything on a piece of plywood and we’d play space shuttle, pushing the buttons, flipping switches, and generally going nuts. Either way, I took my Arduino kit back out of its ...

Yo, check it

Yo, check it. I have a website again. Way back when, my website had a bunch of travel photos (mostly visible on my Flickr stream. And talked about other things that interested me at that time. I was very keen about nanotechnology among other things, but that field has evolved considerably and I've been too busy to keep up. Now I'm more interested in semantic web. Stuff, and am fooling around with a wiki. That hopefully will pick up some semantics at some point.
