Actually, both of these are questions on the Alzheimer’s ‘quick screen’. I watched this with my father in 2007:. 8220;Who is the president of the United States now? Long pause) “That clown”. Me) “Dad, he wants the name of the clown.”. Long pause) “Truman.”. Nice try Dad, especially with George W. Bush as president. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Quote of the day.

Truncated thoughts: Generational tax loophole
http://www.truncatedthoughts.com/2015/01/generational-tax-loophole.html
Politics, religion, statistics, life and miscellany. Subscribe in a reader. Wednesday, January 21, 2015. It's interesting that Obama is spending so much time this week on tax proposals that would seem to be completely dead in a Republican congress, regardless of their merits. I'll let economists debate the effects of increasing the capital gains rate, and let them not come to a conclusion. Of the three ways of which capital gains are given favored tax status, this one is the least defensible. Now, there ...

Truncated thoughts: Happy 2015

Politics, religion, statistics, life and miscellany. Subscribe in a reader. Wednesday, December 31, 2014. 2014 was my first full year of retirement, since I retired June 1, 2013. I was one of those retirees who stayed somewhat busier than they anticipated. I anticipated being able to do more cycling, but that turned out not to be the case. It was wonderful to see my grandson grow during the year right in front of my eyes as we took care of him about 3 days a week. What's up for 2015? Thought for the day.

Truncated thoughts: Another Act Coming to Illinois Pension Theatre

Politics, religion, statistics, life and miscellany. Subscribe in a reader. Saturday, May 09, 2015. Another Act Coming to Illinois Pension Theatre. As I predicted in March, 2014, http:/ mikekr.blogspot.com/2014/03/illinois-pension-crisis-prediction.html. The Illinois Supreme Court struck down the 2013 Illinois pension reform bill. It was a unanimous decision, widely expected. So what was accomplished? We might suggest a amendment along these lines: figure out what pension a patrolman with 30 years would ...

Truncated thoughts: Just because something has a low probability doesn't mean it's unusual

Politics, religion, statistics, life and miscellany. Subscribe in a reader. Thursday, June 04, 2015. Just because something has a low probability doesn't mean it's unusual. Just because something has a low probability (if things were random) doesn't mean it's unusual. There's a great illustration of this in Martin Gardner's book, The Magic and Mystery of Numbers. Consider a lattice, which will look like a Cartesian plane from middle school math:. I can think of a couple of real-life examples of this.

Truncated thoughts: The Republican Obamacare Alternative

Politics, religion, statistics, life and miscellany. Subscribe in a reader. Friday, February 13, 2015. The Republican Obamacare Alternative. Republicans have been correctly criticized for doing nothing about Obamacare's problems but trying to repeal it, as if we were going back to some pre-Obamacare system we all loved, rather than a system probably even more chaotic. Now there's an alternative, analyzed at Health Care Reform Blog, by Bob Laszewski. Furthermore, there's the general issue about any plan, ...

Loyola University of Chicago is doing an ad campaign that's all over the Loop. But it's mysterious to me. Here, they contend there are two job offers for every student, but show a cup of coffee. Truncated thoughts: Oddest scatterplot I've seen

Politics, religion, statistics, life and miscellany. Subscribe in a reader. Monday, June 09, 2014. Oddest scatterplot I've seen. A basic tool of statisticians is the scatterplot. You have two variables (let's call them x and y) and put them on a graph with each observation being a dot. You then look at the pattern of dots. Typically, one might see a positive pattern, a negative pattern, or no pattern at all. A well behaved scatterplot of each type might look like this:. So now we can see what's generatin...

Truncated thoughts: Hobby Lobby and corporate medical insurance

Politics, religion, statistics, life and miscellany. Subscribe in a reader. Monday, March 31, 2014. Hobby Lobby and corporate medical insurance. Hobby Lobby is arguing that the Affordable Care Act should not require the company to cover birth-control in its employer-provided health insurance because it conflicts with the Christian owners' religious beliefs. Most of the coverage has looked at this as a religious rights issue, or treated it as an opportunity for satire ( the Daily Show being a prime example.
